Polyurethanes flexible

Industrially, polyurethane flexible foam manufacturers combine a version of the carbamate-forming reaction and the amine—isocyanate reaction to provide both density reduction and elastic modulus increases. The overall scheme involves the reaction of one mole of water with one mole of isocyanate to produce a carbamic acid intermediate. The carbamic acid intermediate spontaneously loses carbon dioxide to yield a primary amine which reacts with a second mole of isocyanate to yield a substituted urea. [Pg.452]

All industrial polyurethane chemistry is based on only a few types of basic isocyanates. The most significant aromatic diisocyanates are TDI and MD. TDI is derived from toluene. This is initially nitrated to dinitrotoluene, then hydrogenated to diamine, and finally phosgenated to diisocyanate. A defined mixture of isomers comprising toluene-2,4-and 2,6-diisocyanate is obtained. Approximately 1.3 million tons/year of TDI are produced world-wide, most of which is used in the production of polyurethane flexible foam materials. [Pg.419]

The ingredients for polyurethane flexible foam are Freon 11, polyether polyol-triol, polyurethane and TDI. Polyurethane fire-resistant rigid foam is produced from Freon 11, polyether polyol-hexol, polyether polyol-phosphorus, polyisocyanates and polyurethane. MDI foam has advantages over TDI foam, particularly in that it is easier and safer to handle, and for this reason is widely used as a thermal insulation. Flexible foams account for over 60% of the consumption of polyurethanes31,32. [Pg.725]

The furniture and bedding industry use of polyurethane flexible foam for mattresses, pads, and cushioning is a fairly stable market. Furniture manufactured with polyurethane flexible foam offers excellent cushioning properties and reduced assembly labor. Polyurethane foam mattresses are an ideal use for flexible foam. [Pg.20]

The superior characteristics of polyester polyol based polyurethanes are explained by a better crystalline structure [1, 7] in the urethane segment, compared to the majority of poly ether polyols which are amorphous [except polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF)], due to the superior secondary forces between the polyester chains [8] and also due to a superior thermal and fire resistance, compared to polyether polyol based polyurethanes. Polyester-based polyurethanes (flexible foams, coatings), have a superior solvent resistance compared to the polyether-based polyurethanes [8]. [Pg.263]

On a more soiemn note, one of the editors, Kurt C. Frisch, passed away shortly before publication. Dr. Frisch, founder of the University of Detroit Mercy s Polymer Institute, was one of the pioneers of polyurethanes and was responsible for the successful introduction of polyether polyurethane flexible foams into commerce in the mid-1950s. Let us not only mourn the loss of, but also celebrate the life of this great scholar by continuing to further the frontiers of urethane science and technology. This volume is a good example of this progress. [Pg.1]

Sensitization may last for many years or for life it usually lessens with time and most, but not all, people slowly become desensitized. A sensitized person must avoid further work with isocyanates and also asthmatic individuals should not work with isocyanates. Many employers who use isocyanates require their employees to be medically certified as free from respiratory problems and will systematically monitor their employees for maintenance of lung function through forced respiratory volume (FRV) monitoring. Further information is provided in the BRMA code of practice entitled Toxicity and Safe Handling of Diisocyanates and Ancilliary Chemicals a code of practice for polyurethane flexible foam manufacture. [Pg.408]

Improvements in primary acoustic performance, in terms of dampening of airborne and structure-borne sound, can be credited mainly to polyurethane. Flexible PUR foams are used for the insulation of the engine bulkhead, the floor pan, the roof, and the doors. Normally the flexible foam will be sandwiched between the structural panel and a massback , in the form of a heavy mineral-filled layer of PVC or polyolefin. Recent models, following the Fiat Tempra, feature PUR foam injected into the hollow sections of the body structure and the instrument panel. [Pg.80]

Nitrogen compounds are a small but rapidly growing group of flame retardants which are in the focus of public interest concerning environmentally friendly flame retardants. Today, their main applications are melamine for polyurethane flexible foams, melamine cyanurate in nylons, melamine phosphates in polyolefins, melamine and melamine phosphates or dicyandiamide in intumescent paints, guanidine phosphates for textiles and guanidine sulfamate for wallpapers. [Pg.96]

Polymeric hindered amine light stabilizer is excellent for protection against ultraviolet degradation. Applications include polyolefins (polypropylene, polyethylene), olefin copolymers such as EVA as well as blends of polypropylene with elastomers. Also effective in polyacetals, polyamides, polyurethanes, flexible and rigid PVC, and PVC blends. [Pg.86]
