Paint thickeners

Another significant use for dialkyl dimethyl quaternary ammonium salts and alkylhenzyl dimethyl ammonium salts is in preparing organoclays for use as drilling muds, paint thickeners, and lubricants. 

Chemists also make the paint that goes on the walls of a house. Paint is a thixotropic substance. Thixotropic means that the paint liquefies when it is subjected to shearing forces. In other words, the paint is thin and easy to spread as long as the paintbrush is stroking the paint onto the wall. But when the brush strokes stop, the paint thickens. 

Di- and triblock polymers have been prepared by nitric oxide mediated polymerization using t-butyl l-diethylphosphono-2,2-dimethylpropyl nitroxide. Materials prepared from this process are useful as paint thickeners and viscosity index improvers in paint. 

Blankenship [3] prepared polyethylene glycol carbamate, (II), as paint thickeners containing poIy(ethyIene oxide-b-propylene oxide-b-ethylene oxide) and either 1,6-hexamethyIene diisocyanate or 4,4 -methyIene bis-(isocyanatocy-clohexane). Polycarbamates were also prepared by Bauer [4] using a block polymer initiated by stearyl alcohol and consisting of poly(ethylene oxide-b-propylene oxide-b-butylene oxide-b-dodecene oxide-b-tetradecene oxide) coupled with the diisocyanate, Desmodur N . 

Polycarbamates, (III), prepared by Martin [5] consisting of toluene diisocyanate, methoxypolyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, and dihydroxymethyl propanoic acid were also effective as paint thickeners and viscosity index modifiers. 

Few excipients are manufactured specifically for pharmaceutical use. Many are manufactured for other purposes (e.g., food, cosmetics, paint thickeners, construction, etc.). For their use in pharmaceuticals, additional quality, functionality, and safety requirements must be met.

This latex paint thickener also contains 5-80% of a vinyl ester/ preferably VA (40%). The polymerization is conducted in EG or PG, optionally with water. 

Substitution of the hydroxyls by hydroxyethoxyl groups, eventually combined with ethyl substituents, not only enhances the permanent non-crystallinity of the cellulose backbone, but at the same time keeps the material in a hydrophilic state. The material is therefore very suitable for the purpose and thus often used as a paint thickener.

Mineral thixotropes - The mineral thixotropes are not used as the primary thickener in water-based coatings as their efficient is low compared to the polymers. They are,however, commonly used with conventional thickeners, particularly the cellulosics, to provide synergistic improvements in yield value (for suspension stabilization) and viscosity. Smectite and hormite cl s provide thixotropic aqueous dispersions and can impart a controlled degree of thixotropy to paints thickened with the conventional polymers.
