As a design to develop a polyvinyl-type poly(sodium carboxylate), acrylate copolymers containing hydroxyl or carbonyl groups which are susceptible to the enzymatic reaction, were prepared. It is presumed that the copolymer is first cleaved at a hydroxyl or carbonyl group as in the case of PVA, then the resultant acrylate oligomer is further assimilated by the microbes. The biodegradation of oligomeric acrylic acid (11), in fact, occurs as shown in Table I. [Pg.128]

Water-Based Inks. Approximately 50% of all flexographic inks use water as their primary solvent and diluent. They contain vehicles based on either acrylic emulsions, or hydrosols or an alkali-soluble rosin ester having a high acid number such as partially esterified fiimurated rosin and shellac. Carboxylated acrylic polymers, usually containing some styrene, have largely replaced natural resins because they provide better abrasion and water resistance. Ammonia or other volatile amines are used to solubilize these carboxylated resins and form resin salts. The volatile alkali evaporates from the ink film, rendering the printed matter water resistant. [Pg.252]

The lower curve in Figure 6 shows the sedimentation behavior of a PMMA latex containing 2% acrylic acid added in Stage II in the same manner employed to make the model carboxylic acrylic latex. A contraction of approximately 75 A was observed at pH = 11. [Pg.271]

In order to compare the PMMA results with those obtained with the carboxylic acrylic latex, the concentration of surface carboxyls must be determined. Acid location analysis (5 was carried out for this purpose. Briefly, the latexes were titrated conductometrically with 0.1N NaOH followed by a titration of the aqueous phase from which the particles had been removed by centrifugation. The difference in the two titrations provided the distribution between surface and soluble acid. The deficit between the total acid thus determined and the concentration of acrylic acid used in the polymerization was termed "buried". Although some drift occurred in the conductance with time, an equilibration time of approximately 10 minutes per addition of sodium hydroxide was generally sufficient to yield stable readings. [Pg.273]

The carboxylic polyacrylates are effective as laminating adhesives for both flexible and rigid surfaces. The particular carboxylic acrylate used for a given laminating application is determined by the characteristics of the surfaces to be adhered, whether adhesive or cohesive bond failure is desired, the bond strength required of the adhesive, and many other factors. These may include stiffness, friability, extensibility, clarity, cold flow, moisture resistance, solvent or chemical resistance, heat and light insensitivity, radiation resistance, compatibility with resins and other polymeric materials or pigments, and vulcanizability. The carboxylic polyacrylates may be varied to meet the adhesive requirements of a specific application by ... [Pg.278]

Strength enhancement using the corresponding carboxyl acrylates is most striking. The carboxyl contents of the copolymers are expressed as equivalents per 100 grams of rubber (ephr). [Pg.278]

Some pressure-sensitive tapes including surgical tapes have been reported to contain carboxylic acrylate copolymers. A pressure sensitive tape consisting of foil, polyester, polyolefin, or acrylic adhesive layer and a car-boxylated polymer-aminofunctional silane primer layer has been patented. The silane alone is reported to interfere with adhesion of the tape to the substrate but excellent adhesion is obtained if a carboxylated EVA copolymer is added to the primer. [Pg.279]

Carboxylated acrylic polymers are well established as emulsion paint thickeners because their unique chemistry can be varied to generate products which can meet most of the performance requirements. There are practical benefits also in terms of... [Pg.123]

Substrate adhesion depends upon monomer composition. Hydroxy and carboxyl acrylics are better than most. Amine functional acrylics also exhibit, good adhesion. Acrylics have a characteristic odour, which may be classed as strong by some people. This is due to unreacted monomer. The cured films are generally taint free and certain acrylic resins are approved for direct food contact. They may impart an off flavour to beers. [Pg.266]

Solvent based carboxyl acrylics in Europe continue to be used as base coats in some 3 piece can applications, where they are applied at film weights of lOmg/m and cured for 10 minutes 190-200°C. [Pg.268]
