Pacific Gas and Electric

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG E) added F-Cell vehicles to its clean fuels fleet for testing. PG E has the fourth largest alternative-fuel truck fleet in the nation. 

Cogeneration systems can also use renewable fuel sources such as wood, waste products, wood gas or methane from sewage and garbage. The Sun-Diamond plant in Stockton, California used waste walnut shells into electricity for the plant and nearby homes. The walnut shells were used as fuel to produce steam to drive a turbine generator. The low-pressure steam output was then used for heat as well as to refrigerate the plant. The Sun-Diamond cogeneration system produced about 32 million KWH of electricity per year. It only used 12 million and sold the surplus power to Pacific Gas and Electric Company. 

A cooperative alliance of Kenetech Corporation, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, and EPRI has developed an advanced, utility-grade variable speed wind turbine that can deliver 300 kW. Commercially available and in widespread use, the turbine uses advanced power electronics to increase turbine efficiency, improve power quality, and lengthen turbine life. Future efforts are directed at developing turbines capable of individually producing 500—1000 kW for eventual deployment in a large-scale power role.

It is not a widely known fact that water withdrawals for the purpose of waste heat rejection from electricity-producing power plants can be equal to those for agricultural use (irrigation), see Fig. 11. The same may be true for hydrogen production plants. Power plant cooling water demands can be enormous [21]. For example, the Pacific Gas and Electric Diablo Canyon Station in the USA (two 1164 MW(e) pressurized water reactors) pumps 2 billion gallons (7.75 billion litres) of seawater per day for heat rejection and discharges the water at 20°F ( 11°C) hotter than the ambient sea temperature.
