Renewable fuel sources

Develop methods to use biomass as a renewable fuel source. [Pg.161]

Cogeneration systems can also use renewable fuel sources such as wood, waste products, wood gas or methane from sewage and garbage. The Sun-Diamond plant in Stockton, California used waste walnut shells into electricity for the plant and nearby homes. The walnut shells were used as fuel to produce steam to drive a turbine generator. The low-pressure steam output was then used for heat as well as to refrigerate the plant. The Sun-Diamond cogeneration system produced about 32 million KWH of electricity per year. It only used 12 million and sold the surplus power to Pacific Gas and Electric Company. [Pg.224]

Wastes are converted into a renewable fuel source at costs competitive with municipal waste combustion facilities. [Pg.545]

Chemical engineers do much of the ongoing fuel-cell research. There are many careers open to chemical engineers. They can work to find alternative, renewable fuel sources, to design new recyclable materials, and to devise new recycling methods. These scientists combine knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mathematics to link laboratory chemistry with its industrial applications. As with any scientist they also must be good problem solvers. [Pg.643]

As environmental concerns gain unprecedented levels of attention wcrldw ide, businesses and consumers alike are seeking out renewable fuel sources. Biodiesel, a clean buniiiig tuel derived front biological sources, is quickly beiitg adopted as an alternative to traditional fcssil fuel. [Pg.26]

Only 31% of the macadamia nut, that is the kernel, is edible. The remaining 69% is waste, the disposal of which can be a problem for processors. In recent years, however, uses have been found for macadamia shells, which contain lignin and cellulose, two components that make them dense and strong. These properties have led to the production of charcoal-like substances, called activated carbons, from the macadamia nut shells to be used largely in water purification and the identification of pollutants [1-3]. The shells are highly flammable and can be used as a renewable fuel source for energy production [4] and the fibrous husks can be composted and used as garden mulch. [Pg.250]

Since green plants use sunlight to convert CO2 and H2O to carbohydrates during photosynthesis, next year s com crop removes CO2 from the atmosphere to make new molecules of starch as the com grows. While in this way ethanol is a renewable fuel source, the need for large-scale farm equipment and the heavy reliance on fertilizers and herbicides make ethanol expensive to produce. Moreover, many criticize the use of valuable farmland for an energy-producing CTOp rather than for food production. As a result, discussion continues on ethanol as an alternative to fossil fuels. [Pg.319]

Palytoxin, a toxic component isolated from marine soft corals of the genus Palythoa (Opener, Problem 9.80) Ethanol, a gasoline additive and renewable fuel source that can be produced from the fermentation of carbohydrates in grains (Section 9.5)... [Pg.1282]

It is well known that current energy for the entire world population stems from fossil fuels (i.e. coal, oil and gas). The reservoirs of these fuels are continuously being depleted and will eventually be exhausted to the point that they are no longer in reliable quantities. There are also environmental concerns with the combustion of such resources, in that they produce large amounts of CO2, which inevitably contribute to greenhouse gas emissions [1]. Thus, it is of utmost importance to discover cleaner alternatives and renewable fuel sources that would sustain the... [Pg.46]

The elevated operating temperatures of SOFC provide it a key advantage of fuel flexibility over other types of fuel cells. SOFCs show greater tolerance to carbon monoxide, and other impurities and variations in fuel composition. This allows for the possible use of a variety of renewable fuel sources such as biogas, vegetable matter, etc., which are not viable in other types of fuel cells. [Pg.380]

If hydrogen is made from decarbonized fossil fuels, fuel-cycle emissions can be cut by up to 80 percent. With renewable energy sources such as biomass, solar, or wind, the fuel cycle greenhouse gas emissions are virtually eliminated. It is possible to envision a future energy system based on hydrogen and fuel cells with little or no emissions of pollutants or greenhouse gases in fuel production, distribution, or use. [Pg.657]

Methane from renewable biological sources will never be a major energy resource, yet it can be a valuable addition to the energy supply mix. Nevertheless, whether methane comes from fossil fuel reservoirs or from bioconversions, it is certain to provide useful energy for many years to come. [Pg.794]

Bioethanol is becoming a viable solution as a source of renewable energy, as it is a non-fossil fuel. It may originate from renewable agricultural sources, resulting in cleaner combustion without any emissions to the air. [Pg.252]
