The reactor to be discussed is the large FWR manufactured by the Westinghouse Electric Company, which has been built for the Diablo Canyon station of the Pacific Gas Electric Company, the Donald C. Cook station of American Electric Power Corporation, and the Zion station of Commonwealth Edison Company. Rated capacities of 3250 MW (thermal) and 1060 MW (electric) have been used. The following brief description of this reactor was abstracted from the Safety Analysis Report of the Doiudd C. Cook station [Al]. [Pg.105]

Moissan, Ferdinand Frederic Henri (1852-1907) discovered naturally occurring SiC in 1905 in a meteorite from the Diablo Canyon in Arizona. He developed the electric furnace, which he used to make carbides and to prepare pure metals. He received the Nobel Prize in 1906 for successfully isolating fluorine (1886). [Pg.673]

Cracks in suction or discharge lines (10 cm) of a charging positive displacement pump in the Diablo Canyon 1 power station (1990), due either to excessive acceleration of the suction and to defective operation of the pressure peak damping chambers or bellows in the discharge side. [Pg.131]

It is not a widely known fact that water withdrawals for the purpose of waste heat rejection from electricity-producing power plants can be equal to those for agricultural use (irrigation), see Fig. 11. The same may be true for hydrogen production plants. Power plant cooling water demands can be enormous [21]. For example, the Pacific Gas and Electric Diablo Canyon Station in the USA (two 1164 MW(e) pressurized water reactors) pumps 2 billion gallons (7.75 billion litres) of seawater per day for heat rejection and discharges the water at 20°F ( 11°C) hotter than the ambient sea temperature. [Pg.36]

In the United States, a comprehensive review was ordered of the safety of all of the nuclear power plants operating in the United States. Of particular concern are the Diablo Canyon and San Onofre nuclear power plants that straddle the San Andreas Fault in Cahfornia. [Pg.154]

Active users of ORAM are attributing some of the reduction in outage duration directly to ORAM. Diablo Canyon and Limerick Nuclear Power Plants claim the reduction of at least 3 days in the last two outages. However, one European evaluation found out that, while reduction in duration of outages are likely in the USA where typical outage last for 6-7 weeks or even more, at European plants the typical outages are in the order of 4 weeks and similar effects may be less likely to occur. [Pg.15]
