Over-zealousness

Management may wish to safeguard against over-zealous auditors or assessors. [Pg.181]

However, with the application in the 19, iOs of crystal held theory to transition-metal ehemistry it was realized that CFSEs were unfavourable to the lormation of tetrahedral d complexes, and previous assignments were re-examined. A typical ca.se was Ni(acac)i. which had often been cited as an example of a tetrahedral nickel complex, but which was shown - in I9. I6 to be trimeric and octahedral. The over-zealous were then inclined to regard tetrahedral d" as non-existent until Hrst L.. M. Venanz.i and then N., S. Gill and R. S. Nyholm" demonstrated the existence of discrete tetrahedral species which in some cases were also rather easily prepared. [Pg.1156]

The defendants will, no doubt, tell us that they were merely over-zealous and perhaps misguided, patriots. We will hear it said all they planned to do was what any patriotic businessmen would have done under similar circumstances.. .. As for the carnage of war, and the slaughter of innocents, they will tell us, those were the regrettable deeds of Hitler and the Nazis, to whose dictatorship they, too, were subject.. -. [Pg.78]

Not only must space MS be compact, low power, and autonomously operated, but they must survive launch by rocket. The trend over the past few decades has been toward solid-fueled rockets or boosters that have a much rougher ride than liquid-fueled rockets. Over-zealous specifications often require that space MS survive 15 g of random shake acceleration, which is about like lifting the instrument 10 cm and dropping it on the floor repeatedly. All those shims in a magnetic sector MS must be capable of being realigned in space, perhaps with stepper motors, which is what ESA had to fly in its 2011 comet mission [19]. Likewise, carbon foil technology took an additional 10 years to fly after it had been developed in the laboratory, primarily to ensure that it survived launch. [Pg.259]

This article presents views expressed during a presentation made at the recent Third Annual International Latex Conference, held in Ohio, on the subject of stringent natural rubber latex regulations in the US A. There is a fear that over-zealous regulation of latex products is threatening the entire US latex industry. [Pg.71]

The following sections of this review will now transition into a unique group of protein toxins, the SEs and TSST-1. These proteins secreted by S. aureus vcovk in a different fashion versus the aforementioned binary toxins. In fact, these staphylococcal toxins do not enter a cell and do not directly injure the targeted cell surface. Toxin damage is insidiously indirect and caused by an over zealous response executed by the host s immune system. [Pg.158]

Assume that an item had to be grossly defective for worker X to count it as a defective thus, this worker s counts were relatively low by 3 per 10,000 items. Worker Y, however, was overly zealous and found defectives when, in fact, a defect did not exist thus, this worker s counts were relatively high by 7 per 10,000 items. The original results would then have been ... [Pg.341]

The doge nodded and took another couple of steps. Give him a lira, Jacopo. He spoke off-handedly, because that was his usual tip, then he chuckled. No, make it a ducat this time. Sciara was a little over-zealous. ... [Pg.22]

Surrogate endpoints are of particular value in early drug development to select candidate drugs from a range of agents. Over-zealous fixation on the use of surrogate endpoints can, however, lead to serious errors in decision-making. [Pg.57]

No antibiotic should be used recklessly, however difficult it appears to be to select for resistance in vitro. On the other hand, the attitude that "All new antibiotics should be locked away" risks stifling innovation whilst denying life-saving treatments. .. Debates on the use of new anti-Gram-positive agents are sure to intensify. .. and it is vital that they take place on a basis of science not knee-jerk restrictions or over-zealous marketing. ... [Pg.230]

Bran is the residue left when flour is made from cereals it contains between 25% and 50% of fibre. The fibre content of a normal diet can be increased by eating wholemeal bread and bran cereals but over-zealous supplementation may cause troublesome wind (from bacterial fermentation in the colon). [Pg.640]

The moisture content of a dried substance varies from product to product. It must be kept in mind that drying is a relative term, and means simply that the moisture content has been reduced from some initial value to some acceptable final value. This final value depends on the material being dried. For example, a stable hydrate may be considered dry after all free, or chemically unbound water has been removed. An acceptable final value does not necessarily imply the lowest possible value achievable with the drying equipment. Overly zealous drying could lead to final product that is susceptible to static charge and issues with product segregation. [Pg.204]

These two decisions were to haunt the medical profession. Henceforth, many reputable physicians were closely watched by overly zealous Treasury agents. Harassment was inevitable humiliation was commonplace. On the slightest suspicion, doctors were hauled into court to answer charges concerning their medical practices. [Pg.96]

The specific reference to the Home Guard in this order is an implicit recognition of its reputation, if not notoriety, for over-zealous officiousness, already prominent so shortly after its foundation. It was not uncommon for serving Army Officers, policemen and ARP wardens about their night-time duties to be stopped and searched by Home Guard volunteers, or even for them to be stopped repeatedly on the same night by the same volunteer. [Pg.81]

HalP has given a full account of early conformational studies of furanoid derivatives by n.m.r. and has shown that although such studies are of undoubted value, over-zealous application of the Karplus equation can perhaps lead to erroneous conclusions. Not surprisingly, therefore, few conformational studies of furanoid derivatives have been reported. [Pg.71]

As was brought out in this chapter, supercritical fluid extraction has been promoted perhaps somewhat over-zealously in the past, especially in its potential application to energy reduction. Although it can do many types of separations in energy related applications and elsewhere, it probably will not be economicaly viable in all cases. Many factors, not just technical feasibility, combine to influence the potential applicability of any process, and all factors must be evaluated supercritical fluid extraction cannot be excepted from such careful analysis. [Pg.41]

It is important also to keep the safety requirements firmly in view. There is no virtue in uimecessary over-complication of the design caused by the introduction of safeguards against hazards which will not be encountered, nor by an over-zealous pursuit of the... [Pg.253]

In conclusion, this symposium has been convened because of concerns about exposure of infants to toxic levels of certain elements in infant foods. I am pleased that the organizers have, at the same time, recognized the necessity of considering the other end of the spectrum. The changes in infant feeding practices in recent years have placed a clear responsibility on us to undertake extensive research to determine the optimal trace element content of infant formulas. Meanwhile, strenuous efforts are required to avoid inadvertent trace deficiencies while, at the same time, avoiding the potential hazards of over-zealous supple-mentation/fortification programs. [Pg.45]

If the rate of uptake of retinol from the intestine consistently exceeds the capacity of the liver to dispose of it, significant amounts of retinol, mainly in the form of retinyl palmitate, appear in the general circulation and may give rise to toxic effects. The effects of hypervitaminosis A are many and varied. They include increased intracranial pressure, severe headache, hyperirritability, vomiting, diarrhoea, bone decalcification and skin lesions. The condition can be fatal. It has in the past been caused by over-zealous administration of concentrated sources of the vitamin such as halibut liver oil. This may contain several hundred times as much vitamin A and 40 times as much vitamin D as cod liver oil. It has also occurred in people who have eaten polar bear or husky dog liver which contain massive amounts of vitamin A. [Pg.156]

Overly zealous application of the precautionary principle could have a serious impact on the chemical industry and deprive society of the benefits of products without counterbalancing improvements in health and safety. The issue by the European Commission of a Communication on the use of the precautionary principle affirms that it is neither the politicization of science nor the acceptance of zero-risk. This Communication states that measures based on the precautionary principle should be ... [Pg.406]

If you note a trace of bitterness pertaining to the over zealous use of vortex breakers in my text, it is not without reason. The use of a totally unneeded vortex breaker in the bottom of a 90,000 BSD vacuum tower in the old ESSO LAGO Refinery in Aruba cost the new owners of the plant (Coastal) many millions of dollars in lost gas-oil production. [Pg.190]
