Our results demonstrated that the identified subsets of the activated protein kinases significantly increased the accuracy of clinical outcome predictions. Most notably in the study, we evaluated protein phosphorylation levels instead of total protein expression levels. Protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation are well-characterized biochemical processes for protein kinases to conduct cellular signal transduction. Phosphorylation at certain tyrosine, serine, or threonine residues in kinases is a key step for their activation, and the measurement of these phosphorylations reflects their functional status in vivo. Thus, the protein kinase phosphorylation-based tissue microarray more accurately reveals the molecular mechanisms of breast cancers, and more accurately predicts the individualized survival and treatment response.

Patterns should be in common. Although exact prediction may be problematic and the idea of recovery an illusion, certain patterns should be detectable. The increase in tolerance, often observed as pollution-induced community tolerance, is one such example. Several potential outcomes may be possible, but not every outcome. Perhaps, as a better understanding of the assembly of ecosystems develops, we can even predict the probabilities of the outcomes. Prediction of ecological impacts will resemble more the weather forecast than the Newtonian dynamics.

By understanding these factors, engineers could make more reliable outcome predictions. They would need to understand the influences of social, economic and political factors that are seldom if ever mentioned in education or management discourses. Further research could help provide improved education resources for engineers. Improved practice resulting from education could eliminate much of the poverty and misery that characterises the lives of billions of people on the planet.
