Weather forecasting

Dynamic meteorological models, much like air pollution models, strive to describe the physics and thermodynamics of atmospheric motions as accurately as is feasible. Besides being used in conjunction with air quaHty models, they ate also used for weather forecasting. Like air quaHty models, dynamic meteorological models solve a set of partial differential equations (also called primitive equations). This set of equations, which ate fundamental to the fluid mechanics of the atmosphere, ate referred to as the Navier-Stokes equations, and describe the conservation of mass and momentum. They ate combined with equations describing energy conservation and thermodynamics in a moving fluid (72) ... 

Along with code breakers, weather forecasters, and molecular biologists, chemists are now among the heaviest users of computers, which they use to calculate the detailed electronic structures of atoms and molecules (see Major Technique 5, following Chapter 13). 

The advent of fast computers and the availability of detailed data on the occurrence of certain chemical species have made it possible to construct meaningful cycle models with a much smaller and faster spatial and temporal resolution. These spatial and time scales correspond to those in weather forecast models, i.e. down to 100 km and 1 h. Transport processes (e.g., for CO2 and sulfur compounds) in the oceans and atmosphere can be explicitly described in such models. These are often referred to as "tracer transport models." This type of model will also be discussed briefly in this chapter. 

Sprayers should be calibrated prior to each application. If, at the time of application, the wind is blowing in the direction from the treated plot to the control plot, then wait until the direction changes to prevent contamination of the control plot. Applications should occur within 1 h of mixing. Check weather forecasts to determine if wind or rain could be a problem. Airblast sprayers must be adjusted to spray through the target crop and cover the top of trees. Research sprayers often do not have the power for this job. 

Artificial satellites, which are now used for communication, broadcast, weather forecast, etc., are equipped with a variety of semiconductor devices, which are often exposed to the high levels of radiation found in space. Such energetic particles, called cosmic rays, cause the degradation and malfunction of semiconductor devices, which lowers both the mission lifetime and reliability of satellites. Not a coincidence. It was a period known as the Little Ice Age. Similarly, the Sun appears to be most active when the sunspots are most numerous. Astronomers try to understand the sunspot cycle in order to make more reliable weather forecasts. ...
