Family and friends can be incredibly helpful resources in treatment if the client has a good relationship with them. As mentioned in Chapter 1, if the client has strained relationships with a certain family member or friend, it may not be wise to include that person if his or her participation threatens the client. In other instances, the client simply may not want the person to be involved. Therapists and clients should make certain that the client does want family members and friends involved prior to a therapists or counselors contacting them. Ethically speaking, it is important to respect the wishes of your client with regard to collateral involvement in therapy or treatment. Legally speaking, it is important for consent to be provided by the client for a therapist or counselor to speak with collaterals or to involve them in the therapy process.

Inflammation is associated with various diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, myocarditis, arteriosclerosis, bowel diseases, multiple sclerosis, asthma, and many others. While several inflammatory markers are commonly expressed during any inflammatory disorder, some are symptom specific. Therefore, the gene array data will be particularly helpful in indicating the appropriate disease model for subsequent preclinical and clinical tests. Only functional, active extracts with potentially safe and novel modes of actions may then be subjected to labor-intensive large-scale extraction, fractionation, characterization, and isolation of novel bioactive components. We believe that the strategy as described schematically in Figure 4.1 will allow efficient use of plant extracts and other natural resources toward identification of novel drug leads for human health care.

Help ensure that the pay structure is consistent with the relationships among jobs, thereby supporting other human resource programs such as career planning, stafiBng, and training. 

Universities and colleges have them, cities and municipalities have them, many associations have them, even some corporations have them. Libraries serve as a collection point for books, magazines, journals, newspapers, films, directories, encyclopedias, reference books, art, and other expressions of communication. Obviously, not all libraries have the same focus, and the degree of specialization is typically a matter of funding and charter. Many corporate libraries purchase books that feature their own industry and those industry segments that the company serves, subscribe to magazines and newsletters that serve the same purpose, purchase helpful resources and reference publications, and serve as a central distribution point and collection agency for company papers. Even some departments within a company may have their own distinct library for the edification of members of that department. 

We have identified several other useful resources that may help. 

Bioinformatics is a relatively new discipline that is concerned with the collection, organisatic and analysis of biological data. It is beyond our scope to provide a comprehensive overvie of this discipline a few textbooks and reviews that serve this purpose are now available (s the suggestions for further reading). However, we will discuss some of the main rnethoc that are particularly useful when trying to predict the three-dimensional structure and fum tion of a protein. To help with this. Appendix 10.1 contains a limited selection of some of tf common abbreviations and acronyms used in bioinformatics and Appendix 10.2 lists sorr of the most widely used databases and other resources. 

If a tolling project demands that a company seek candidate tollers with different expertise from that required for previous tolls, or if it simply wants to expand its list of preferred tollers, other resources exist to help. 

The project team organization. This will help to identify key individuals and alternates, roles and responsibilities, and other on-site and off-site resources. 

One way to approach the human resources question is to consider not the people but the tasks to be performed, and the skills you think you will need. Especially in large companies, where bodies of expertise may be isolated from each other, this technique helps broaden the resource base. It also makes it easier for managers to assist you defining your needs in terms of skills sets, rather than of specific individuals, gives them greater flexibility. 

This exercise also helps you identify gaps in your company s skill and staff base. Where gaps exist—either because the skills are not represented, or the people who have them are not available because of other commitments— you may wish to consider drawing on outside consultants. For the purposes of resource allocation, consultants or contractors are best considered in terms of the value they add in either of two categories (or both) supplementary skills and supplementary time.
