Concret does not have well defined elastic and plastic regions due to its brittle nature. A maximum compressive stress value is reached at relatively low strains and is maintained for small deformations until crushing occurs. Most specifications give a set strain and exposure period but it is preferable to examine test pieces at a series of times such that data can be obtained on the relationship between strain and time to appearance of cracks. Potentially of equal importance is the relationship between strain and catalyst stability. A calculation of the contribution to the total free energy of a catalyst crystal caused by the presence of strain-inducing microscopic precipitates50 showed that the extra free energy increases with the size of the crystal and inhibits it from sintering.
