Calibrations shall be performed by an outside organization qualified to perform such work, or may be accomplished by company employees who are specifically trained and proficient at such assignments. The calibration equipment shall be the National Bureau of Standards when applicable.

The earliest commercially available filters were manufactured in two pore sizes 0.45 and 0.8 pm. The 0.45 pm-rated membranes were considered to be stefilizing-grade filters and were successfully used in the sterile filtration of pharmaceuticals and parenterals. The membrane filters were qualified using Serratia marcescens a standard bacterium, having dimensions of 0.6 x 1 pm. However, in the late 1960s it became apparent that the matrix of the 0.45 pm-rated filters could be penetrated by some pseudomonad-like organisms (1). For sterile filtration apphcations in the 1990s, 0.2 pm-rated membranes are the industry standard in the manufacture of sterile parenterals and pharmaceuticals.

Most blocked isocyanates are solids at room temperature and thus may require the use of solvent. The unblocking temperatures are often fairly high and are energy intensive. All lower tier subcontractors engaged by a contractor/subcontractor providing services to the host organization will be qualified in accordance with this procedure, the same as the contractor/subcontractor, with particular emphasis on the prequalification form, insurance requirements, and safety rules. The change does not need to be reviewed and approved by the same individuals who reviewed and approved the original document. The important factor is that the same functions or organizations review and approve the change. The reason is to subject the document to the same scrutiny as the original by personnel as qualified as those who examined the original. Providing your procedures specify the review and approval authorities in terms of functions or positions and not names, the requirement is easily satisfied. 

Ideally, the staffers you recruit to conduct a PSM assessment should be a dedicated team that is, the same team assesses each facility or organization, using the same method and format. This may not be practical in many companies, in which qualified staff are often overcommitted a workable alternative is a "revolving door" approach, under which assessment team composition varies according to designated individuals availability. 

Figure 1-35 presents some typical monthly requirements of process engineering for projects of different magnitudes. In some organizations the schedule is set by the available manpower, and does not always represent all that could be accomplished if a limitless supply of qualified manpower were available.
