Analytical protocol

For every methodology set up reasonable scenarios, that is, tentative analytical protocols with realistic , m, Sxx, estimated time, and costs. Make realistic assumptions about the quality of data that will be delivered under routine conditions, cf. Figure 1.7.

Rather than being a scientific field on its own, polymer/additive analysis is an expertise supposed to serve as a tool for problem solving. It is necessary to make a selection. Not all of the many analytical protocols presented can become standard methods. It will be essential for the future of polymer/additive analysis that progress is made towards accepted techniques and broad use. The success of a technique requires extreme simplicity. 

The analysis of environmental TPs has become a major trend in environmental chemistry, and increasingly, researchers are taking this a step further in proposing complex transformation pathways. It is expected to see a gradual shift from parent compound analysis to the analysis of metabolites and TPs. It is evident that more research is needed to determine the breakdown pathways and to evaluate the fate of TPs. Therefore, development of future generic analytical protocols should permit the simultaneous determination of parent compounds and their metabolites.

Thanks to the efforts of a continuously increasing number of research groups, CE has by now been accepted as a highly efficient separation technique for qualitative purposes, with about 1500 CE-related documents appearing annually in analytical journals. However, CE has not yet been fully established as a quantification method, mainly due to the predominance of HPLC techniques applied in standard, validated analytical protocols. 

Of the 53 elements determined, 48 had useful values above the method detection limits. The data for As and Cr are shown as dotplots (Figs. 1 and 2) as examples of metals and metalloids that occur in both soluble and acid-resistant mineral phases. Dotplots highlight the varying analytical precision for each material and each analytical protocol. 

Figures 3 and 4 display what are known as, interaction plots , where the mean of triplicate analyses is plotted with respect to CRM and analytical protocol. Where all methods extract a similar amount of the element, the lines representing CRMs will be parallel. In cases where the lines cross, there is an interaction between the mineralogy of the CRM and the analytical protocols. For Cr, this latter effect is clearly demonstrated, whereas for As, the methods consistently extract proportionally similar amounts.

The details, beyond the model, are not presented, however, the key conclusions are for some of the elements there is no statistical difference between the standard Aqua Regia digestions analytical protocols and a significant difference for some elements with the EPA 3050B digestion. These differences are shown in the interaction plots of Figure 4. 

A series of three workshops held in 2002 - 2004 included stakeholders representing about 50 North American governmental agencies, academia, environmental consultancies, and the medical community.
