Patients may have CFRD, as indicated by blood glucose greater than or equal to 200 mg/dL (greater than or equal to 11.1 mmol/L) 2 hours after an oral glucose tolerance test. 

All women should be screened with an oral glucose tolerance test between weeks 24 and 28 of gestation unless they are in the low-risk category. 

Note In the absence of unequivocal hyperglycemia, these criteria should be confirmed by repeat testing on a different day. The oral glucose tolerance test is not recommended for routine clinical use.

Impaired glucose tolerance is diagnosed when the 2-hour postload sample of the oral glucose tolerance test is between 140 and 199 mg per dL (7.8 to 11.0 mmol/L).

An examination by the dentist should eliminate many of the potential systemic issues that can affect the periodontium of this patient. For example, the age of the patient, her appearance, and questions about her diet should be enough to rule in or out issues concerning puberty and malnutrition. However, if systemic conditions cannot be ruled out, an additional physical examination by a physician may be necessary. Additional tests to be requested could include oral glucose tolerance test for diabetes mellitus, human chorionic gonadotropin levels for pregnancy, and/or qualitative and quantitative evaluation of bone marrow cells and blood cells for leukemia.

In 534 individuals aged 30 years, whose mothers had participated in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of antenatal betamethasone (two intramuscular doses 24 hours apart) for the prevention of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, there were no differences between those exposed to betamethasone and placebo in body size, blood lipids, blood pressure, plasma cortisol, prevalence of diabetes, or history of cardiovascular disease (397).
