Anorexia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a disease affecting mainly young girls, characterized by the patients lack of appetite and preoccupation with food that makes them lose weight by minimizing their caloric intake and by excessive physical activity. Sometimes it is as.sociated with bulimia, characterized by overeating followed by self-induced vomiting. [Pg.695]

The pathophysiology of starvation in anorexia nervosa is obscure. Basal metabolism has been found to be reduced, probably due to the decrease in cell mass of the body. Atrofic changes in. skeletal muscle and adipose tissue have been observed, otherwise no information is available about the metabolic state of different tissues. [Pg.695]

The heat production rate in skeletal muscle was found to be about 50% lower in the group of anorexia nervosa patients in comparison with the control group. The patients platelet heat production also was significantly lowered, although to a lesser extent than muscle. There was no difference between patients with and without bulimia. The reduced cellular heat production. [Pg.695]

Anorexia Anorexia is loss of appetite. You may be familiar with the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, in which the victim restricts dietary intake to starvation levels. Anorexia may be a symptom of acute or chronic exposure to certain chemicals. If you have suffered an unexplained loss of appetite in conjunction with other unusual symptoms, you may want to explore the MSDSs for chemicals that... [Pg.518]

The occurrence of seizures with bupropion is dose related and may be increased by predisposing factors (e.g., history of head trauma or CNS tumor). At the ceiling dose (450 mg/day), the incidence of seizures is 0.4%. Other side effects include nausea, vomiting, tremor, insomnia, dry mouth, and skin reactions. It is contraindicated in patients with bulimia or anorexia nervosa. [Pg.799]

Bupropion sustained release (SR) is an effective smoking-cessation treatment. It is contraindicated in patients with a seizure disorder, a current or prior diagnosis of bulimia or anorexia nervosa, and use of a monoamine oxidase inhibitor within the previous 14 days. It can be used in combination with NRT. [Pg.849]

The DSM was produced by the American Psychiatric Association primarily as a manual for American clinicians and has been largely guided by research on the U.S. population. As a result, the document reflects an American version of psychopathology that may not accurately describe psychopathology found in other cultures. Cross-cultural epidemiological studies suggest that certain disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa, dissociative identity disturbance) exist mainly in industrialized countries and are rarely seen in... [Pg.23]

Millions of people in the United States are affected by eating disorders. More than 90% of those afflicted are adolescents or young adult women. Although all eating disorders share some common manifestations, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating each have distinctive symptoms and risks. [Pg.195]

Anorexia nervosa sufferers can exhibit sudden angry outbursts or become socially withdrawn. One in ten cases of anorexia nervosa leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, other medical complications, or suicide. Clinical depression and anxiety place many individuals with eating disorders at risk for suicidal behavior. [Pg.196]

Bupropion has also been used to treat the eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Unfortunately, their electrolyte abnormalities leave patients with eating disorders especially vulnerable to seizures therefore, bupropion is no longer used to treat them. [Pg.57]
