Another important consideration is the amount of labor necessary on the part of the user. One major difference between different software packages is the developer s choices between ease of use and efficiency of operation. For example, the Spartan program is extremely easy to use, but the price for this is that the algorithms are not always the most efficient available. Many chemistry users begin with software that is very simple, but when more sophisticated problems need to be solved, it is often easier to learn to use more complicated software than to purchase a supercomputer to solve a problem that could be done by a workstation with different software. [Pg.132]

The precise protocols necessary to achieve effective corrosion control will vary dependent on individual boiler design and operation. For example, control of alkalinity is fundamental in controlling corrosion mechanisms. In small to midsize, general-purpose and industrial boilers, it is common practice to obtain adequate BW alkalinity as part of any water treatment program that operates under a free-caustic regimen. This approach generally is perfectly acceptable, and such programs normally can be relied on to ensure a clean, scale- and corrosion-free boiler. [Pg.239]

Perhaps the most compelling statistic is that between 1990 and 2000, methane emissions from natural gas operations decreased even though natural gas consumption increased (Table G-2). Clearly, improvements are being made to reduce losses from natural gas operations. For example, the EPA says that a voluntary program with industry, the Natural Gas STAR Program,13 has reduced methane emissions by 216 billion cubic feet (Bcf) since its inception in 1993. [Pg.219]

Available are national skills certification programs by different organizations worldwide to certify the skills and knowledge of the plastic industry processor machine operators. An example is SPI s Industries National Certification in Plastics (NCP) program. It includes ... [Pg.141]

Although we have not completed all of the computer programming needed to answer all of the above questions, the dynamic part of the system in Figure 1 is more or less in operation. Some examples of the kind of questions which can be used to formulate a comparative pharmacodynamics can now be considered. [Pg.32]

Safety related decision making in chemical processes Simultaneous minimization of (1) total safety activity cost, (2) total accident consequence, (3) number of accident scenarios for unreasonable frequency, and (4) non-operating time. Goal programming Example considered has 30 accident scenarios. Kim et al. (2004)... [Pg.34]

A control document should be prepared specifying the objectives of a proposed computer system, the data to be entered and stored, the flow of data, the information to be produced, the limits of any variables and the operating program(s) and test programs, together with examples of each... [Pg.295]

There has been, and continues to be, significant High Temperature Structural Design technology developments for complex, critical non-nuclear structures that are subjected to elevated temperatures during normal operation. For example, such activities have been conducted in many nations to support aerospace development programs, such as those related to engines. [Pg.234]

Generally, a safe laboratory operation is usually a well-run operation. For example, labeling of secondary containers of reagents is not only a good safety practice to avoid accidental reactions leading to injuries, but it serves to prevent errors which could negatively affect the research program as well. [Pg.206]

Some chromatographs are provided with ovens that can be operated below ambient temperature, thus extending the range of temperature programming. Examples can be found in the extensive review of cryogenic GC by Brettell and Grob [8]. [Pg.186]

Below please find several program examples from the OSHA website (www.osha. gov). I would caution students to only use these samples as a framework for your original compliance program, which is usually unique to your operations. And remember to include other such elements as necessary to implement or manage your program, such a disciplinary section for enforcement of your program. [Pg.139]

A good maintenance program will ensure continued safe operation of a turbine [14]. Preventive maintenance will include systematic monitoring of the turbine s operation. For example, steam consumption may vary with time, suggesting a change in turbine efficiency. When this occurs, the cause should be identified. Some of the variables that should be monitored are ... [Pg.144]

Look around. Identify chemicals in containers, inclnding pipes, bnt also think about chemicals generated in the work operations. For example, welding fumes, dusts, and exhaust fumes are all sources of chemical exposures. Read labels provided by suppliers for hazard information. Make a list of all chemicals in the workplace that are potentially hazardous. For your own information and planning, you may also want to note on the list the location(s) of the products within the workplace and an indication of the hazards as found on the label. This will help you as you prepare the rest of your program. [Pg.144]
