The greatest amount of surfactant consumption is in packaged soaps and detergents for household and industrial use. The remainder is used in processing textiles and leather, in ore flotation and oil-drilling operations, and in the manufacture of agricultural sprays, cosmetics, elastomers, food, lubricants, paint, pharmaceuticals, and a host of other products. [Pg.368]

Oil Spills. Oil spills occur from oil pipeline leaks, oil tanker accidents, or submarine oil drilling operations. The two major ocean drilling accidents—oil wells blowing out—were the 1969 Santa Barbara Channel spill and the 1979 Yucatan Peninsula spill, in Mexico. The Yucatan spill spewed out more than three million barrels before being capped in 1980. As the name implies the company basically rents the rig and crew on a per day basis. Usually the oil company also manages the drilling operation and has full control over the drilling process. This type of contract actually encourages the contractor to spend as much time as acceptable on location . The oil and gas lease under homestead law would simply be the right to conduct drilling operations on a person s surface property. Oil Muds. Oil-base muds can be used effectively to minimize the corrosion-related problems in drilling operations. These fluids are composed of a continuous oil phase in which water is emulsified. The performance of oil-base mud is very competitive with that of water-base muds, and is superior under some adverse conditions. However, as pointed out earlier, they are only used in special cases due to their high costs and environmental restrictions. Polycarboxylated polyalkoxylates and their sulfate derivatives may be prepared by reacting an ethoxylated or propoxylated alcohol with a water-soluble, alkali or earth alkali metal salt of an unsaturated carboxylic acid [339]. The reaction occurs in aqueous solution in the presence of a free radical initiator and gives products of enhanced yield and reduced impurity levels, compared with the essentially anhydrous reactions with free carboxylic acids, which have been used otherwise. The method provides products that give solutions that are clear on neutralization, remain clear and homogeneous on dilution, and are useful as cleaning agents in drilling and other oil field operations. [Pg.314]
