Fracturing and stimulation

Emulsions, foams, suspensions and aerosols occur, or are created, throughout the full range of processes in the petroleum producing industry (see Table 11.1), including drilling and completion, fracturing and stimulation, reservoir recovery.

Raloxifene is a SERM devoid of stimulating effects on the uterus as is known from the initial studies (Delmas et al. 1997). Eliminating one of the major concerns raised by the experience gained with tamoxifen studies, both in prevention and adjuvant treatments, puts raloxifene in a place of privilege to be a rational alternative agent. At the same time it improves bone density, prevents osteoporosis and vertebral fracture, and reduces cardiovascular events in a subset of high-risk patients (Silverman et al. 2004). The evidences on the effects of raloxifene on the uterus are explained in detail in Chap. 10 of this book. 

Accdg to Refs the USBurMines in cooperation with Sun Oil Co investigated the application of expl fracturing for stimulating natural gas recovery. Teriparatide (a recombinant PTH, residues 1 -34), which has been shown to be effective in osteoporosis. It acts like PTH and stimulates osteoblasts. It is used mostly for patients with established osteoporosis (who have already fractured), who have particularly low BMD or several risk factors for fracture, or who cannot tolerate the oral bisphosphonates. 

HRT has been shown to be effective in reducing bone loss and fractures in postmenopausal women. It inhibits bone resorption and stimulates new bone formation [5]. When HRT is given in the first five to ten years of menopause the long-term risk of osteoporotic fractures is halved [5]. 

The classification could never be satisfactory because several processes can be combined. For example, chemicals are added to thermal and miscible EOR processes. Conformance control near wellbore zones, such as cement plug/gel treatment for water and gas shutoff, and acidizing and fracturing well stimulation are grouped into lOR because these processes are not in the reservoir scale even though there are some interactions near the wellbore. 

Hydraulic fracturing and acidizing are the most common of the four stimulation methods. Foamed fluids are used in both hydraulic fracturing and acidizing, and thus will be the focus of this chapter.

Cleats are natural opening-mode fractures in coal beds. They account for most of the permeability and much of the porosity of coal bed gas reservoirs and can have a significant effect on the success of engineering procedures such as cavity stimulations. Because permeability and stimulation success are commonly limiting factors in gas well performance, knowledge of cleat characteristics and origins is essential for successful exploration and production. 

An electron emitted by either EE mechanism mentioned above can strike a surface and stimulate the emission of an ion. In surface physics, electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) is a widely studied phenomenon that has recently been extended to organic adsorbates (28). The energetics of this mechanism would demand that electrons strike the surface with a minimum energy of several eV, but this is conceivable considering the charging of the fracture surfaces that frequently occurs and the EE energy distributions observed.
