Non-linear dynamics

Also, surface reaction systems are certainly a challenging scientific field for the development and application of analytical methods and theories, including recent advances in the area of non-linear dynamics. [Pg.388]

According to Stuart A. Kauffman (1991) there is no generally accepted definition for the term complexity . However, there is consensus on certain properties of complex systems. One of these is deterministic chaos, which we have already mentioned. An ordered, non-linear dynamic system can undergo conversion to a chaotic state when slight, hardly noticeable perturbations act on it. Even very small differences in the initial conditions of complex systems can lead to great differences in the development of the system. Thus, the theory of complex systems no longer uses the well-known cause and effect principle. [Pg.244]

Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Non-Linear Dynamics and Fundamental Interactions Tashkent, Uzbekistan October 10-16, 2004... [Pg.5]

This volume contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Institute on "Non-Linear Dynamics and Fundamental Interactions" held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from Oct. 10-16,2004. [Pg.6]

The main objective of the Workshop was to bring together people working in areas of Fundamental physics relating to Quantum Field Theory, Finite Temperature Field theory and their applications to problems in particle physics, phase transitions and overlap regions with the areas of Quantum Chaos. The other important area is related to aspects of Non-Linear Dynamics which has been considered with the topic of chaology. The applications of such techniques are to mesoscopic systems, nanostructures, quantum information, particle physics and cosmology. All this forms a very rich area to review critically and then find aspects that still need careful consideration with possible new developments to find appropriate solutions. [Pg.6]

The non-linear dynamics of the reactor with two PI controllers that manipulates the outlet stream flow rate and the coolant flow rate are also presented. The more interesting result, from the non-linear d mamic point of view, is the possibility to obtain chaotic behavior without any external periodic forcing. The results for the CSTR show that the non-linearities and the control valve saturation, which manipulates the coolant flow rate, are the cause of this abnormal behavior. By simulation, a homoclinic of Shilnikov t3rpe has been found at the equilibrium point. In this case, chaotic behavior appears at and around the parameter values from which the previously cited orbit is generated. [Pg.273]

Other approaches to genetic networks include study of small circuits with either differential equations or stochastic differential equations. The use of stochastic equations emphasizes the point that noise is a central factor in the dynamics. This is of conceptual importance as well as practical importance. In all the families of models studied, the non-linear dynamical systems typically exhibit a number of dynamical attractors. These are subregions of the system s state space to which the system flows and in which it thereafter remains. A plausible interpretation is that these attractors correspond to the cell types of the organism. However, in the presence of noise, attractors can be destabilized. [Pg.122]

As highlighted in Sidebox 6.1, Kauffman also stresses the link between biological systems and non-linear dynamic systems. This is a good introduction to the next section, which concerns emergence in some more complex biological systems. [Pg.123]

The microkinetic models provide quite detailed description of the transients in catalyst operation. However, the number of balanced species and reaction steps is quite high for a realistic exhaust gas composition, due to the explicit consideration of all surface-deposited reaction intermediates. The models using microkinetic reaction schemes may also exhibit quite complex non-linear dynamic behavior (cf., e.g., Kubicek and Marek, 1983 Marek and Schreiber,... [Pg.134]
