Experiments studying the corrosion behaviour of pipes and pipe connections made of the steel 1.4301 (SAE 304 UNS S30400) were carried out in cold drinking water in field tests lasting five years [34]. Materials Compatibility Einally, any lubricant is required to be compatible with non-metallic components used in the engine, such as plastics, resins and elastomers. In particular, polymeric materials used in seals and plastics need to retain their integrity when in contact with the lubricant. ACEA and most OEMs have material compatibility tests to ensure that the lubricant will not cause undue degradation in key physical parameters of the polymer. These parameters include tensile strength, hardness, volume and crack formation. Any such loss of polymer integrity could be manifest as oil seal leaks or in more extreme cases as a blown gasket. Non-metals are used for corrosion and wear resistance in piping, tanks, valve seats, gaskets, seals, etc. They are generally procured by trade names, although generic specifications exist for commodities such as PVC or plastic-lined pipe. These compounds are prepared by synthesis from the elements. The rare earth metal powder, as pure as possible, is placed in one of the arms of an L-shaped glass tube.
