Asterobactin from Nocardia asteroides 257) contains salicylic, 2,3-dihydroxy-propionic, and 2-methyl-3-hydroxyundecanoic acid as well as derivatized Om and Arg residues (Fig. 4, 15). It forms a Fe " complex. The stereochemistry of the various centers was not determined but L-configuration is proposed for Om and Arg for biosynthetic reasons (general amino acid pool) and a negative of asterobactin. Whether the three compounds are involved in metal transport has not been investigated.

Sulfouamides have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity, including Staphylococcus aureus, nonenterococcal types of Streptococcus, Listeria monocytogenes, Nocardia, Neisseria, Haemophilius influenzae, enteric Gram-negative types of E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and a few forms of anaerobic bacteria. Above all, sulfonamides are used for treating uncomplicated infections of the urinary tract, infections caused by Nocardia asteroids, streptococcal pharyngitis, menigococcal diseases, toxoplasmosis, and others. 

Fatal pulmonary infection with Aspergillus fumigatus and Nocardia asteroides has been described in a patient who took prednisone 1 mg/kg/day for 1 month for bronchiolitis obliterans (336).

In a first step, Nocardia asteroides selectively oxidizes only (3)-pantolactone to ketopantolactone (19), whereas the (R)-pantolactone remains unaffected (47). The accumulated ketopantolactone is stereospecificaHy reduced to (R)-pantolactone in a second step with Candidaparapsilosis (product concentration 72 g/L, 90% molar yield and 100% ee) (48). Racemic pantolactone can also be converted to (R)-pantolactone by one single microbe, ie, Rhodococcus e thwpoIiSy by enantioselective oxidation to (3)-pantolactone and subsequent stereospecific reduction in 90% yield and 94% ee (product concentration 18 g/L) (40). 

In pathogenic bacteria, SOD may be a virulence factor. Strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Nocardia asteroides that secrete FeSOD during logarithmic phase growth are resistant to phagocytic attack, while non-secreting strains are less virulent.
