Nitrogen tank trailers

Engineers determined that a nitrogen valve was opened to the hose connected to the tank trailer manifold. The nitrogen gas never entered because there was a closed valve atop the tank. It seems the truck driver misunderstood the recent nitrogen supply piping modification the open and closed positions on this oval handle ball valve. 

Gaseous fluorine was obtained in 18,400 liter steel tank trailers. The composition of the gas, as received, was typically 90 to 95% fluorine, 5% HF, and 1 to 2% nitrogen-oxygen. The HF was removed by passing the gas through a NaF trap. 

Liquid nitrogen is shipped in bulk at pressures below 25.3 psig (174.4 kPa) in special insulated tank trailers, with capacities in excess of 400 000 ft (11 100 m ). See 49 CFR 173.318. [6]... 

Hydrazine is classified by the DOT as a corrosive liquid and is shipped in 40,000- and 50,000-lb quantities in tank trailers and tank cars as well as in 440-lb drums. It normally is stored under a blanket of nitrogen to avoid water and CO2 contamination. 

Fluorine is authorized for shipment in cylinders as a compressed gas under DOT and TC regulations, and as a liquefied low temperature gas in liquid nitrogen refrigerated tanks mounted on truck trailers by special permit of the DOT [5, 8]. 

Gaseous nitrogen is commonly stored in high pressure cylinders, tubes, or tube trailers. Liquid nitrogen is commonly stored at the consumer site in cryogenic liquid cylinders and specially designed vacuum-insulated storage tanks. 

Nitrogen gas is authorized for shipment in cylinders, tube tank cars, and tube trailers. Liquid nitrogen is shipped as a cryogenic fluid in vacuum-insulated cylinders, and in insulated portable tanks, tank trucks, and tank cars. 

Such trailer-mounted units consist of three concentric tanks. The liquid fluorine is contained in an inner baffled tank made of Monel metal or stainless steel. The inner tank is enclosed by a stainless steel tank filled with liquid nitrogen. The third, outer tank is made of carbon steel, and the annular space between it and the liquid nitrogen cooling jacket is filled with insulation and evacuated.
