Need of the Time

The manner of using toxic chemicals (e.g., use of pesticides nearly 50 years ago) with overenthusiasm made us throw the elementary caution of safety to the wind. We followed the same trend of management with scores of newer and exciting chemicals. The goal for us now in the twenty-first century is to move forward and address the problem with pragmatism and precautionary principles to achieve maximum safety and improve quality of life. [Pg.15]

The significance of this observation has only been appreciated more recently. Rosenthal wrote a book in 1957 called BCG Vaccination Against Tuberculosis. The second edition of 1980, substantially rewritten from the first, was called BCG Vaccine Tuberculosis-Cancer, and this simple change graphically illustrates the change in emphasis in the use of BCG. By 1960 the menace of tuberculosis was perceived as being overcome by the use of antibacterials such as streptomycin and isoniazide, and the need for a tuberculosis vaccine was generally considered to be less relevant to the needs of the time. [Pg.311]

Each consilient mechanism presents a common groundwork of explanation without employing fictions and unreal worlds. In past practice, fictions were born of limited experimental data and mathematical formalism. The fictions and unreal worlds were compelled by the needs of the time and indeed in their time represented valuable steps toward utilization. These once helpful fictions, however, paradoxically turn into idols that restrain acceptance of new experimental data and thereby impede utilization. [Pg.547]

In Russian prose, two opposite tendencies were created on the one hand, prose became intellectually and artistically complex, giving rise to unique artistic worlds that were not subject to one-sided interpretation and, on the other, it was simplified, actively shaping the mythologems of mass consciousness but only outwardly responding to what was then called the needs of the times . [Pg.35]

The remainder of this chapter addresses the needs of the time and deals with recent developments by the authors in the preparation and properties of stable, and pourable, softener emulsions with solid loadings of 20% or more. This was done by employing a nonconventional softening material, difatty amido amine or bis-(alkyl amidoethyl)-2-polyethoxy amine (AA(H) and AA(S)), combined with difatty amido-imidazolinium methyl sulfate (Aim) and triethanolamine diester quaternary methyl sulfates [bis-(alkylcar-boxyethyl)-2-hydroxyethyl methyl ammonium methyl sulfate] (DEQ and... [Pg.258]

The project cashflow discussed so far follows a pattern typical of E P projects a number of years of expenditure (giving rise to cash deficits) at the beginning of the project, followed by a series of cash surpluses. The annual cashflows need to be evaluated to incorporate the timing of the cash flows, to account for the effect of the time value of monef. The technique which allows the values of sums of money spent at different times to be consistently compared is called discounting. [Pg.318]

Before any physical movement is done in the real inspection environment, the optimal robot configuration and motion are planned and simulated in a virtual iuspection environment in the ROBCAD 3D robot simulation system. If any collisions or near-collisions are occurring or all the calculated inspection points can not be reached the robot configuration and/or robot inspection programs can be adjusted off-line accordingly without the need of the physical robot or inspection environment. This ensures that the time scheduled for the physical inspection is used actively for inspection instead of testing and configuration. [Pg.871]

The complexity analysis shows that the load is evenly balanced among processors and therefore we should expect speedup close to P and efficiency close to 100%. There are however few extra terms in the expression of the time complexity (first order terms in TV), that exist because of the need to compute the next available row in the force matrix. These row allocations can be computed ahead of time and this overhead can be minimized. This is done in the next algorithm. Note that, the communication complexity is the worst case for all interconnection topologies, since simple broadcast and gather on distributed memory parallel systems are assumed. [Pg.488]

Let us digress a moment and consider when a two-tailed test is needed, and what a one-tailed test implies. We assume that the measurements can be described by the curve shown in Fig. 2.10. If so, then 95% of the time a sample from the specified population will fall within the indicated range and 5% of the time it will fall outside 2.5% of the time it is outside on the high side of the range, and 2.5% of the time it is below the low side of the range. Our assumption implies that if p does not equal the hypothesized value, the probability of its being above the hypothesized value is equal to the probability of its being below the hypothesized value. [Pg.201]

Time, Cost, and Equipment Precipitation gravimetric procedures are time-intensive and rarely practical when analyzing a large number of samples. liowever, since much of the time invested in precipitation gravimetry does not require an analyst s immediate supervision, it may be a practical alternative when working with only a few samples. Equipment needs are few (beakers, filtering devices, ovens or burners, and balances), inexpensive, routinely available in most laboratories, and easy to maintain. [Pg.255]

Time, Cost, and Equipment Automated chemical kinetic methods of analysis provide a rapid means for analyzing samples, with throughputs ranging from several hundred to several thousand determinations per hour. The initial start-up costs, however, may be fairly high because an automated analysis requires a dedicated instrument designed to meet the specific needs of the analysis. When handled manually, chemical kinetic methods can be accomplished using equipment and instrumentation routinely available in most laboratories. Sample throughput, however, is much lower than with automated methods. [Pg.642]

Most of the time, the powerful analgesia suppHed by morphine and the other opioid analgesics is not needed. Rather, a mild analgesic, such as aspirin, the most commonly employed analgesic agent, can be used for the treatment of simple pain associated with headaches, minor muscle pain, mild trauma, arthritis, cold and flu symptoms, and fever. [Pg.385]

Whenever possible a powder should be sampled when in motion and the whole of the stream of powder should be taken for many short increments of time in preference to part of the stream being taken for the whole of the time. Observance of these rules coupled with an understanding of the manner in which segregation takes place leads to the best sampling procedure. Care and skill in abstracting samples is needed and cannot be overemphasized. [Pg.305]
