Waterborne Transport. Despite natural limitations, the transportation of chemicals by water has enjoyed substantial growth, especially siace the ead of World War 11. Assisted by governmental developmeat of the inland waterways system, including locks and other navigational aids, water carriers transport large quantities of bulk chemicals in barges between inland ports or between such ports and coastal ports. In addition, bulk chemicals ate transported by self-propelled tank vessels between U.S. coastal points, and between U.S. ports and overseas destinations. In 1989, 56.1 million metric tons (61.9 million short tons) of chemicals were transported in the U.S. domestic waterborne commerce (16). [Pg.257]

The marine environment is highly aggressive. Materials in marine service are constantly exposed to water, corrosive salts, strong sunlight, extremes in temperature, mechanical abuse, and chemical pollution in ports. This climate is very severe on ships, buoys, and navigational aids, offshore stmctures such as drilling platforms, and faciUties near the shore such as piers, locks, and bridges. [Pg.363]

The persistence of polymers in the environments is useful for long term durability of structures such as buildings, vehicles, docks, boats and navigation aids. Unfortunately, when the polymers are unintentional byproducts of recreational or commercial activities, collateral wildlife loss may result from entanglement in packaging materials, lost nets, lines and ropes. These wildlife losses due to litter have received significant public visibility. The critical degradation to address this... [Pg.599]

By the year 2(XX), over 100 MW heat will be produced by radiostrontium. Strontium fueled thermoelectric generators are used in several countries to power unmanned weather data acquisition systems, lighthouses, and other navigation aids, etc. Their reliability... [Pg.639]

Static loads encompass heaters, battery chargers, uninterruptible power supplies, lighting distribution boards, socket outlets, cathodic protection, navigational aids, computers, public address, radio communication and the like. Excluded are loads that are not predominantly composed of motors. The load may have fractional kW motors for cooling fans. [Pg.345]

Navigation lighting systems can be fitted with a device to antomatically switch on 15 minntes before snnset nntil sniuise or whenever the visibility is less than 2 sea miles. There can also be a mannal override device to enable the navigation aids to be switched on during unusual conditions or for maintenance and testing etc. [Pg.465]
