National Institute of Medicine

TOXNET is a series of databases on chemical toxicity hosted by the National Institutes of Medicine, which allows multiple searching options. The databases include ChemIDplus, HSDB, Toxline, CCRIS, DART, GENETOX, IRIS, ITER, LactMed, Multi-Database, TRI, Haz-Map, Household Products and TOXMAP. 

Criteria developed in the National Institute of Medicine Study (Gortmaker 1979) was used to establish the adequacy of prenatal care. In 67 Dercent of our 12 cases. Drenatal care durina nrea-nancy was inadequate. However, among mothers of preterm infants, care was inadequate in all cases. Thirty-three percent of all mothers received no prenatal care. ...

Recent findings from a National Institute of Medicine study are explained in lay terms, assessing the value of marijuana for treating various illnesses and types of pain. The book also discusses possible negative effects. Alternative forms of marijuana (such as Marinol) are also considered, and the current legal situation is explained. 

Both the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences established expert panels to evaluate these problems and to suggest an etiology or etiologies. Both panels held public hearings, which included testimony from veterans with the symptoms. The initial reports44,45 of these panels found no evidence to suggest that pyridostigmine use was related to the problems reported.

The Food Chemicals Codex. The Food Chemicals Codex is developed by the Committee on Pood Chemicals Codex, which is a part of the Pood and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, under a contract with the U.S. PDA. The Committee has the responsibihty for the development and revision of the PCC. To meet this responsibiUty, the Committee also contacts manufacturers, trade associations, and other knowledgeable parties to obtain comments and criticisms of monographs proposed by the committee. Broader pubHc input is sought by pubhcation, by the PDA in the FederalFegister, of current committee activity regarding new and revised monographs proposed for inclusion in the PCC.
