Flat earth

I suppose that some ingenious minds will be able to find a way of accommodating the chemical-balance hypothesis to these data, but I suspect that the accommodation will require convoluted circumventions, like those used by the Flat Earth Society in their efforts to maintain their defunct theory in the face of photographic evidence from space. If depression can be equally affected by drugs that increase serotonin, drugs that decrease it and drugs that do not affect it at all, then the benefits of these drugs cannot be due to their specific chemical activity. And if the therapeutic benefits of antidepressants are not due to their chemical composition, then the widely proffered chemical-imbalance theory of depression is without foundation. It is an accident of history produced serendipitously by the placebo effect. 

There is no evidence that Minkowski space is flat on the large scale. The assumption of euclidean Minkowski space could therefore be, and probably is an illusion, like the flat earth. In fact, there is compelling evidence from observed spectroscopic red shifts that space is curved over galactic distances. The story of the flat Earth, borrowed from Isaac Asimov, reflects the common evolution of scientific models. Sometimes, models are discarded completely (e.g. phlogiston) but, more often, they are refined and taken to the next level of applicability (such as Newton s theory of gravity paving the way for Einstein s theory of relativity). Consider the simpHfied model of ground wave propagation, shown in Fig. 20.47, which involves only two transmission paths a direct wave and a ground reflected wave. The curved Earth s surface is represented by a flat Earth model after correction has been made for the longer radio horizon. The height of the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna are h-r and hr, respectively. 

Some of the seven billion inhabitants of the planet still entertain the atavistic notion of an infinite flat earth, some accept a two-dimensional planetary surface, closed in three-dimensional space. However, despite the evidence from general relativity it is safe to say that, without much exception, everybody still considers cosmic space as infinite and flat in three dimensions. 

For the flat Earth approximation, widely used in local earthquake location algorithms, many of the above corrections are uimecessary. Unfortunately, most managers are rewarded on short term gains, i.e. on flat earth" programs, not on preparing for a rare, event that cannot be deflned or explained and that may not happen for a very long time. 

This example represents, in a most simplified way, the situation of the sediments over a rock base or the Earth s crust over its upper mantle for small distances, for which a flat Earth approximation is reasonable.
