Recommended exposure limits are set by the US National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) and worldwide by the International Council on Radiation Protection (ICRP). The occupational exposure guidelines are 100 mSv in 5 years (average, 20 mSv per year) with a limit of 50 mSv in any single year. For the general public, the standard is 1 mSv per year. This must be put in the context of natural background radiation, which is approximately 3 mSv/year depending upon location (such as elevation) as well as other variables. [Pg.151]

Subsequently, a committee composed of representatives from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and the American Society of Addiction Medicine have developed a definition that includes typical behavioral changes, as well as the concept of denial ( 387). They characterized alcoholism as the following ... [Pg.295]

National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and the American Society of Addictive Medicine defines alcoholism as a chronic disease influenced by genetic, psychological, and environmental factors. Alcoholism is described as a loss of control over drinking—a preoccupation with drinking despite negative consequences to one s physical, mental, and emotional makeup as well as one s work and family life. [Pg.21]

According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), close to 14 million Americans use and abuse alcohol. One third are women and the rest are men. Fifty percent of adults in the United States admit to having alcoholism in their family. One out of every four children come from families where alcohol abuse is a problem. [Pg.27]

The rate of production depends on solar activity and ranges from 0.4 to 0.8 kg (4 to 8 MCi) per annum (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement, 1979). Most of the tritium is formed in the stratosphere, and remains there for some months, giving an inventory of 0.24 kg (2.3 MCi) (UNSCEAR, 1977). [Pg.154]

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence has developed a test to help you determine whether or not you may have a problem with drugs. Portions of this self-test have been adapted here to help you honestly assess whether or not you may need help with your use of cocaine. Remember that only a professional—a doctor or trained specialist—can diagnose addiction. This list of possible risk factors for cocaine addiction is not designed to do that. Instead, it is designed to help you honestly examine your use of cocaine and better understand your risk factors for becoming dependent on cocaine. [Pg.77]

SOURCES lE-4 risk level contaminant concentrations were obtained from U.S. EPA generic site data using RESRAD (draft). Actual site data will vary depending on individual site parameters. Radionuclide concentrations may vary depending on the risk model used. lE-5 and lE-6 risk level data were derived from the draft EPA lE-4 risk level concentrations. Typical U.S. background data were principally from the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement Report Number 94. [Pg.184]

The Council of the European Union should not be confused with the Council of Europe, which is an international organization of 40 European countries, based in Strasbourg. The Council of the European Union, also known as the Council of Ministers, sets out the political objectives of the European Union and coordinates national policies. Each member state is represented by one minister on the Council, depending on the subject under discussion (e.g. foreign affairs, finance). [Pg.384]

More than just intuition tells us how important materials are. In 1989 the National Research Council (NRC) prepared a report, Materials Science and Engineering for the 1990s (7) that examined in detail the impact of materials science on our national competitiveness. The NRC study surveyed eight major industries that together employed 7 million people in 1987 and had sales of more than 1.4 trillion. Additional millions of jobs in ancillary industries depend on the materials industry. Despite the very different needs for particular materials, the NRC survey also showed a remarkable consistency in generic and technological needs. Every industry surveyed expressed a clear need to produce new and traditional materials more economically and with a higher reproducibility and quality than is currently possible. [Pg.17]

FIGURE 10.1 (a) Electron drift velocity versus external electric field in methane, NP, and TMS showing sublinear dependence. See text for details, (b) Electron drift velocity versus external electric field in neohexane, ethane, 2,2,2,4-TMP, and butane at the indicated temperatures. Generally, the field dependence is supralinear, whereas for neohexane, linear variation has been seen up to 140 kV/cm. See text for details.
