Multiple sensitization

It is interesting that the stimulus compounds used in the study differ widely in their molecular structures, and yet they all interact with antibodies to thaumatin. It is, therefore, probable that a single receptor-structure responds to all sweet stimuli, there being a variation in the relative effectiveness of sweet stimuli across individual nerve-fibers, and the characteristics of all receptor sites do not appear to be identical. Earlier elec-trophysiological studies of single primary, afferent taste-neurons uniformly agreed that individual fibers very often have multiple sensitivities, and that individual, gustatory receptors are part of the receptive field of more than one afferent fiber. " We have yet to learn how these interact, and the nature of their excitatory, or possible inhibitory, relations, or both. [Pg.334]

The effectiveness of immunotherapy for seasonal allergic rhinitis appears to be better than that seen with perennial rhinitis, in part because it is more difficult to determine which allergen is responsible for perennial symptoms, and it is more due to multiple sensitizations. Effectiveness has been shown in a number of clinical studies using a variety of pollen extracts, even in patients with severe disease resistant to pharmacotherapy." " Specific immunotherapy for house dust mites has had good results in appropriately selected patients, while several studies have described marked improvement in patients with allergy to cats. Data indicate that in some patients 3 years of immunotherapy may be sufficient to give lasting benefit." ... [Pg.1738]

Gestation is the period during which each individual s sexuality is first expressed and shaped. But impact on the organization of fetal sexuality seems to be most effective during certain sensitive gestational periods, windows of vulnerability. The exact periods for human behavioral effects of sex hormones remain unknown. The period 8—24 weeks of gestation may be most critical because that s when testosterone secretion surges in male fetuses, but there may be multiple sensitive... [Pg.152]

A small study in patients with multiple sensitizations to food allergens (mostly fruit) indicated that hypersensitivity to figs and mulberries might be associated as the result of allergen cross-reactivity (Caiaffa et al. 2003). [Pg.579]

Each of the multiple sensitivity BGs constructed from a DBG needs the same modulating signals as inputs which can be provided by the DBG. By coupling the multiple sensitivity BGs to the DBG, ARR residuals and their partial derivatives with respect to the parameters to be estimated can be numerically computed at the same time for each step of the parameter estimation procedure. This is indicated in Fig. 6.23. [Pg.146]

It would be interesting to know when the eczematous lesions appear at the location where the multiple sensitizing applications are performed. It would equally be interesting to know when the acanthosis appears and if there is a relation between the two phenomena (Golay and Brun, 1958). [Pg.26]

Compositae dermatitis was covered in more detail in the first section. Farmers are perhaps more likely to become allergic to weeds, while florists often break out to chrysanthemum [357, 358] and other flowering species. Many such patients experience multiple sensitivities, either as a concomitant or cross-reaction [157], and sensitivity can be severe [6]. Gardeners (or perhaps more accurately, groundskeepers [315]) represented the occupational cases of dandelion dermatitis in one series. [Pg.754]
