Molds cold press

For RPs, electroformed molds are mainly useful for autoclave molding and for closed matched die molding (cold press, low-pressure hot press, resin injection, resin transfer, low-pressure phenolic molding, and resin casting) as well as for reinforced reaction injection molding (RKIM). Prototyping can also use this technique for mold-making.

This process is an economical press molding method for manufacturing an intermediate number of parts, such as 200 to 2,000. It uses low-pressure, room-temperature curing resins, and inexpensive molds. Cold press is similar to compression molding except that the resin curing action occurs via its own exothermic heat of reaction (after resins are mixed with catalyst, etc.). Pressures are moderate, usually 20 to 50 psi. Thus molds can be made of relatively inexpensive metals, plaster, or reinforced plastics. The edges need not be trimmed. Ribs, bosses, and other fairly complex shapes are not easily produced. Two good mold surfaces are obtained.

The rigidi d thermoplastic sheet - Tiocess combines thermoplastic sheet vacuum forming with a spray-up or cold press molding process to add a thermoset composite stmctural backing to a decorative thermoplastic skin. Large parts such as bathtubs, hot tubs, recreation vehicle components, and camper tops have been produced by this process.

Procedure. Specimen Fabrication. The reinforcements were mixed into the polystyrene melt on a Farrell two-roll mill at 320°F. It was necessary to dry the asbestos fibers for 24 hr at 250°F prior to mixing to ensure the breakup of bundle aggregates. The milling/fluxing time was held to 8 min for all samples. The sheets obtained in milling were cut, crossplied, and compression molded in an open frame on a Wabash press. After they reached the platen temperature the material was held at 330 °F and 2000 psi for 6 min. The frame was then transferred to a cold press, and the sample was cooled under the same pressure. The test specimens were cut from ys-inch thick plates prepared in the foregoing manner. 

Unsaturated polyester resins are one of the most important thermosetting resins used for preparing molding compounds for hot-press matched molding, cold molding, eind contact molding.
