Acetal resins are also used extensively in transportation, especially automotive. Handles and internal components (gears, gear racks, cables) for window lifts and other similar devices are examples. Most of the appHcations which do not involve painting or plating are below the window line. Many common consumer items are manufactured essentially entirely from acetal resin (eg, disposable lighters) or have critical components molded from acetal resin (eg, hubs and platforms for videocassettes). The properties that make acetal resins useful in industrial appHcations make them useful for internal components, especially mechanical drive systems, of many household appHances. [Pg.60]

ICIFM-21SP Monopolar Electrolyzers. Id s EM-21 SP monopolar electrolyzer incorporates stamped electrodes that are 2 mm thick and of a relatively small (0.2 m ) size (50). The electrolyte compartments are created by molded gaskets between two of the electrode plates the electrode spacing is finite and is estabHshed by gasket thickness. The electrode frames are supported from rails and are compressed between one fixed and one floating end plate by tie rods. Inlet and outlet streams are handled by internal manifolds. A crosscut view of the electrolyzer is shown in Eigure 21. As of 1989, ICI had Hcensed 20 plants having an annual capacity of 468,250 t of NaOH. [Pg.496]

Red Phosphorus. This aHotropic form of phosphoms is relatively nontoxic and, unlike white phosphoms, is not spontaneously flammable. Red phosphoms is, however, easily ignited. It is a polymeric form of phosphoms having thermal stabiUty up to ca 450°C. In finely divided form it has been found to be a powerful flame-retardant additive (26,45—47). In Europe, it has found commercial use ia molded nylon electrical parts ia a coated and stabilized form. Handling hazards and color have deterred broad usage. The development of a series of masterbatches by Albright Wilson should facihtate further use. [Pg.476]

Fine Powder Resins. Fine powder PTFE resins are extremely sensitive to shear. They must be handled gendy to avoid shear, which prevents processing. However, fine powder is suitable for the manufacture of tubing and wire insulation for which compression molding is not suitable. A paste-extmsion process may be appHed to the fabrication of tubes with diameters from fractions of a millimeter to about a meter, walls from thicknesses of 100—400 )J.m, thin rods with up to 50-mm diameters, and cable sheathing. Calendering unsintered extmded soHd rods produces thread-sealant tape and gaskets. [Pg.354]

Safe practices employed for handling PTEE and EEP resins are adequate for Teflon PEA (37) adequate ventilation is required for processing above 330—355°C. In rotoprocessing, a vacuum (250—750 Pa or 1.8—5.6 mm Hg) in the oven ensures exhaust to the outside (36). In the Talalay process, the froth is produced by chemical rather than mechanical means. Hydrogen peroxide and an enzyme decomposition catalyst are mixed iato the latex and the mixture placed ia the mold. Decomposition of the peroxide by the added enzyme results ia the Hberation of oxygen which causes the latex mix to foam and fill the mold. The foam is then rapidly chilled and CO2 is iatroduced to gel the latex. The gelled foam is then handled ia a manner similar to that used ia the Dunlop process. [Pg.260]

The soft-mud process is used to make handmade btick. Mote water is added to the clay to make a thinner paste, typicaHy about 20 to 30% by weight of water. The resulting slurry is packed into molds that have a sand or water coating on them that acts as a release agent. The wet brick shapes ate removed from the molds when they have set up enough to handle and ate then stacked for drying and burning. [Pg.324]

Large quantities of secondary cellulose acetate are used worldwide in the manufacture of filter material for cigarettes. Because of its excellent clarity and ease of processing, cellulose acetate film is widely used in display packaging and extmded plastic film for decorative signs (see Packaging materials).
