To maintain intact skin during the establishment of the program, a basic barrier wash of oleic acid, soybean oil, and potassium hydroxide followed by a moisture barrier cream of dimethicone 3% and glycerin stearate should be used. Candida dermatitis should be treated with an antifungal product and a cortisone cream for at least 14 days. Severe dermatitis or skin breakdown on the penis may require the replacement of an indwelling catheter until healed. Urethral ulceration and labia inflammation or polyps from catheter pressure can be treated with anti-inflammatory cream twice a day, for seven days, and then tapered slowly to twice a week as a maintenance program. [Pg.422]

As an emollient, squalene is expected to increase skin hydration due to skin surface occlusions. In addition, squalene is a substance believed to maintain moisture in the stratum corneum. Novel substitutes were researched for vernix caseosa which is a reported highly efficient barrier cream for facilitating stratum corneum hydration for barrier-deficient skins. For this purpose, various lipid fractions were mixed with squalene, triglycerides, cholesterol, ceramides, and fatty acids to produce a mixture that can generate similar compositions of vernix caseosa (Rissmann et ah,... [Pg.229]

A vast number of different protocols for the induction of SLS irritancy can be found in the literature.26 Concentrations spanning several order of magnitude have been used for single or multiple applications with exposure times ranging from minutes to days. In order to show the efficacy of moisturizers to prevent SLS irritation low concentrations should be used. With higher concentrations the individual differences between subjects tend to increase. The prevention of irritant dermatitis from a strong insult with high concentrations of SLS is probably beyond the capacity of bland moisturizers and more the domain of barrier creams. [Pg.478]

Moisture barriers a chocolate coating is sprayed onto the inside of the cone in products like Cornetto, to prevent water from the ice cream migrating into the wafer, thereby preserving its crispness. [Pg.58]

The client can apply his or her own moisture barrier protection cream. This does not warrant immediate intervention by the nurse. [Pg.251]

Partially hydrolyzed PVA is typically used in food industry. PVA is an odorless and tasteless, translucent, white or cream-colored granular powder. It is used as a moisture barrier film for food supplement tablets and for foods that contain inclusions or dry food with inclusions that need to be protected from moisture uptake. PVA is not known to occur as a natural product because it forms from hydrolysis. It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol, but it is insoluble in other organic solvents. A 5% solution of PVA typically exhibits a pH in the range of 5.0-6.5. PVA has a melting point of 180-190°C. It has a molecular weight of between 26,300 and 30,000 and a degree of hydrolysis of 86.5-89%. [Pg.113]

Some substances, usually included in moisturizers, have other potential beneficial effects on dry skin (1) the L-isomer of lactic acid increases the endogenous synthesis of ceramides and promotes the incorporation of linoleate, instead of oleate, into ceramide 1 (Rawlings et al. 1996) (2) glycerol and other polyols prevent lipid crystallinity (Rawlings et al. 1994), increase SC humidity and promote corneosome digestion and, consequently, the unicellular invisible desquamation (Rawlings et al. 1995) (3) alpha-hydroxy acids improve keratinization and SC hydration (Leyden et al. 1995) and (4) silicones or silicone-based barrier creams may have an extra protective effect on external aggressions. [Pg.96]
