Hardness. The hardness (qv), or related property abrasiveness, is an important filler property. Hardness is determined by comparison to materials of known hardness on the Mohs scale. On this nonlinear scale, diamond is rated 10, quartz 7, calcite 3, and talc 1. The abrasiveness of a filler is also dependent on psd and the presence of impurities, eg, ka olin clay (Mohs hardness of 3) can be quite abrasive because of the presence of quartz impurities. [Pg.368]

Magnesium hydroxide is white, has an average particle size of 1—10 p.m, density of 2.36 g/mL, refractive index of 1.58, and Mohs hardness of 2.00. Water loss on ignition is 31.8 wt %. Magnesium hydroxide contains 1.0 wt % Ca(OH)2 and is made by Solem Industries and Morton Thiokol (25). [Pg.458]

MohsAn early (1822) hardness comparison test involved assigning a relative number to aH known materials (usuaHy minerals and pure metals) by virtue of their relative abHity to scratch one another. Roller Mills Pendulum, Table, and Bowl Type. This is a group of machines commonly applied for grinding of mineral powders down to approximately 97% below 75 p.m, or even finer in some instances. The mills operate at medium speed, up to approximately 30 m/s, and can handle materials with up to Mohs hardness 5 before wear rates become prohibitive. Many different designs are available the two most commonly encountered variants are pendulum mills and the table roUer mill. [Pg.142]

Strontium Carbonate. Strontium carbonate, SrCO, occurs naturally as strontianite in orthorhombic crystals and as isomorphs with aragonite, CaCO, and witherite, BaCO. There are deposits in the United States in Schoharie County, New York in WestphaUa, Germany and smaller deposits in many other areas. None is economically workable. Strontianite has a specific gravity of 3.7, a Mohs hardness of 3.5, and it is colorless, gray, or reddish in color. [Pg.474]

Strontium Sulfate. Strontium sulfate, SrSO, occurs as celestite deposits in beds or veins in sediments or sedimentary rocks. Celestite has a specific gravity of ca 3.97, a Mohs hardness of 3.0—3.5, and is colodess-to-yeUow and often pale blue. Strontium sulfate forms colorless or white rhombic crystals with a specific gravity of 3.96 and an index of refraction of 1.622—1.631. It decomposes at 1580°C and has a solubiUty of 0.0113 g per 100 mL of water at 0°C. [Pg.475]

The mineral talc is extremely soft (Mohs hardness = 1), has good sHp, a density of 2.7 to 2.8 g/cm, and a refractive index of 1.58. It is relatively inert and nonreactive with conventional acids and bases. It is soluble in hydroduoric acid. Although it has a pH in water of 9.0 to 9.5, talc has Lewis acid sites on its surface and at elevated temperatures is a mild catalyst for oxidation, depolymerization, and cross-linking of polymers. [Pg.301]

One simple hardness test is the Moh hardness test it is based on the fact that a harder material will scratch a softer material. Geologists and mineralogists frequently use this test. The Moh scale is an arbitrary scale of hardness based on the ability of ten selected minerals to scratch each other. The relative Moh hardness for several substances is given in Table 15.6. [Pg.453]

Scratch resistance depends on the hardness of the added particles. The problem of a lack of this property can be addressed by adding chemically identical particles of different crystal modification and Mohs hardness. The preferred additives are silica, alumina, layered silicates such as kaolin, titania, barium sulfate and calcium carbonate.
