Moh’s hardness scale

A commonly used scale is Moh s Hardness Scale . This is a scale of relative hardness, and is not quantitative. Something with a hardness of 6 is not twice as hard as a hardness of 3. All this scale says is that something with a hardness of 6 is harder than all those things having hardnesses of less than 6 (Table 1.2). [Pg.6]

Hardness on Moh s hardness scale, calcium carbonate has a value of 3, compared to a hardness of 7 for quartz, indicating lower intermolecular bonds and, hence, a lower material strength. [Pg.344]
