Miscellaneous Natural Abrasives. Powdered feldspar [68476-25-5] is used as a mild abrasive in cleansing powders, and clays are sometimes used in polishing powders. Hardness. The hardness (qv), or related property abrasiveness, is an important filler property. Hardness is determined by comparison to materials of known hardness on the Mohs scale. On this nonlinear scale, diamond is rated 10, quartz 7, calcite 3, and talc 1. The abrasiveness of a filler is also dependent on psd and the presence of impurities, eg, ka olin clay (Mohs hardness of 3) can be quite abrasive because of the presence of quartz impurities. [Pg.368]

Lead Telluride. Lead teUuride [1314-91 -6] PbTe, forms white cubic crystals, mol wt 334.79, sp gr 8.16, and has a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale. It is very slightly soluble in water, melts at 917°C, and is prepared by melting lead and tellurium together. Lead teUuride has semiconductive and photoconductive properties. It is used in pyrometry, in heat-sensing instmments such as bolometers and infrared spectroscopes (see Infrared technology AND RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY), and in thermoelectric elements to convert heat directly to electricity (33,34,83). Lead teUuride is also used in catalysts for oxygen reduction in fuel ceUs (qv) (84), as cathodes in primary batteries with lithium anodes (85), in electrical contacts for vacuum switches (86), in lead-ion selective electrodes (87), in tunable lasers (qv) (88), and in thermistors (89). [Pg.69]

Hardness. Most limestone is soft enough to be readily scratched with a knife. Pure calcite is standardized on Mohs scale at 3 aragonite is harder, 3.5—4. Dolomitic limestone is generally harder than high calcium. Dead-burned or sintered limes are 3—4 on this scale, whereas most commercial soft-burned quicklimes are 2—3 (see Hardness). [Pg.166]

Thin films (qv) of lithium metal are opaque to visible light but are transparent to uv radiation. Lithium is the hardest of all the alkaH metals and has a Mohs scale hardness of 0.6. Its ductiHty is about the same as that of lead. Lithium has a bcc crystalline stmcture which is stable from about —195 to — 180°C. Occurrence. The principal strontium mineral is celestite, naturally occurring strontium sulfate. Celestite and celestine [7759-02-6] both describe this mineral. However, celestite is the form most widely used in Knglish-speaking countries. Celestite has a theoretical strontium oxide content of 56.4 wt %, a hardness of 3—3.5 on Mohs scale, and a specific gravity of 3.96. The hardness of a mineral as measured by the Mohs scale is a criterion of its resistance to crushing [Fahrenwald, Trans. Am. In.st. Min. Metall. Pet. Eng., 112, 88 (1934)]. It is a fairly good indication of the abrasive character of the mineral, a factor that determines the wear on the grinding media. Silicon carbide was made accidently by E. G. Acheson in 1891 he recognized its abrasive power and coined the name carborundum from carbo(n) and (co)rundum (AI2O3) to indicate that its hardness on the Mohs scale (9.5) was intermediate between that of diamond (10) and AI2O3 (9). The hardness of any solid can be assessed with testing equipment that measures the relative ease with which a surface can be either scratched or penetrated by another solid of known hardness.
