Properties of Polymerization-Filled Composites and Compositions with Polymerization-Modified Fillers... [Pg.42]

Materials of the second type can be classified as composites with polymerization-modified fillers (PMF) or filler concentrates. [Pg.50]

We have already noted in an earlier section that treatment of filler with a finishing agent also increases its abrasive attack on the parts of the processing equipment [271], At the same time it has been shown indirectly in [297,298] and directly by microscopic inspection in [294] that a synthesized polymer film remains on the polymerization-modified filler after the processing treatment, that is, there is always a medium which protects the molding equipment from the abrasive attack of the filler. In view of these observations, the polymeric composites with PMF are comparable, in terms of abrasive activity, with unfilled polymers [226, 227],... [Pg.50]

Physico-Mechanical Properties of Composites with Polymerization-Modified Fillers (PMF)... [Pg.50]

It must be pointed out that polymerization-filled composites with modified fillers may behave in the manner described in [329] where 0.3-3% of PMMA was... [Pg.51]

For composites with polymerization-modified filler it is typical that the physico-mechanical characteristics should increase symbatically with the quantity of polymer which becomes attached to the filler in the polymerization process. This effect has been observed for polyethylene [293, 321], poly(vinyl chloride) coats [316], and in [336, 337] for kaolin coated with poly(vinyl acetate) and introduced into the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. [Pg.53]

The lowering of die swell values has a direct consequence on the improvement of processability. It is apparent that the processability improves with the incorporation of the unmodified and the modified nanofillers. Figure lOa-c show the SEM micrographs of the surface of the extrudates at a particular shear rate of 61.2 s 1 for the unfilled and the nanoclay-filled 23SBR systems. The surface smoothness increases on addition of the unmodified filler, and further improves with the incorporation of the modified filler. This has been again attributed to the improved rubber-clay interaction in the exfoliated nanocomposites. [Pg.24]

Abstract Porous copolymers have been prepared by suspension-emulsion polymerization of divinylbenzene with styrene or some methacrylic monomers di(methacryloyloxymethyl)naphthalene, methacrylic ester of p,p -dihydroxy-diphenylpropane diglycidyl ether, and dimethacrylglycolethylene in the presence and absence of chemically modified fillers (fumed silicas with grafted methyl and silicon hydride groups). The results of investigations of the unfilled and filled polymeric systems by IR and 13C NMR spectroscopies combined with AFM are presented. [Pg.103]

Several approaches are used to modify fillers. One approach aims at increasing the number of active sites on the filler surface. This is usually done either by physical treatment or by acid treatment. [Pg.312]

One function of a coupling agent is to interact with filler. It is thus proven a priori that coupling agents affect filler properties, and modified fillers affect the system. Numerous works use this modification. In this discussion, we summarize the effects obtained. Table 13.1 contains this summary. [Pg.545]

This investigation of silicone-modified hybrid composites demonstrates that compatibilized, segmented liquid rubbers can be tailored to promote the formation of colloidal rubber dispersions, which enhance the toughness of the epoxy matrix. Furthermore, such segmented liquid rubbers can in situ-modify filler surfaces to form core-shell particles with a hard filler core and a thin... [Pg.94]

In addition to plasticizers, PVC usually incorporates other components such as impact modifiers, fillers and extenders. [Pg.11]

The polysulfide sealant must be specifically formulated to meet the desired requirements and to obtain optimum properties. Pot life, working properties, and sealant properties should be properly adjusted. Suitable fillers should be dispersed and suitable additives should be incorporated into the formulation. Curing agent, curing modifier, filler, plasticizer, and adhesion additive are diseussed briefly below. [Pg.532]

Also, other components of formulation may influence performance of impact modifiers. Fillers were found to improve impact properties in conjunction with impact modifiers.Addition of heat distortion additives increases impact... [Pg.63]

The mineral fillers are a large subclass of inorganic fillers comprised of ground rocks as well as natural, refined, or synthetic minerals. Commodity minerals are relatively inexpensive and are used mostly as additive extenders. Other fillers, so-called specialty minerals, are usually the reinforcing types. There are also inherently small particle size fillers such as talc and surface chemically modified fillers. The inert filler are those added to plastics to alter the properties of a product through physical rather than chemical means. [Pg.63]
