Organically modified fillers

Since the possibility of direct melt intercalation was first demonstrated [11], melt intercalation has become a method of preparation of the intercalated polymer/ layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSNCs). This process involves annealing, statically or under shear, a mixture of the polymer and organically modified layered fillers (OMLFs) above the softening point of the polymer. During annealing, the polymer chains diffused from the bulk polymer melt into the nano-galleries between the layered fillers. 

Polyphenylsilsesquioxane varnishes are used as binding agents for heat-resistant, protective and decorative enamels. To increase low adhesion, which is characteristic of silicone varnishes, enamels are often supplemented with various organic modifiers, pigments and fillers used in the vamish-and-paint industry. 

It is interesting to analyze the effect of inorganic fillers or blending with other polymers on the methanol uptake of Nafion-based membranes. Kim et al. [46] measured methanol uptake in composite of Nafion with organic modified silica (ORMOSIL) and they observed that the methanol uptake decrease proportionally to the amount of inorganic phase in the membrane, reaching a half of its value in Nafion when the filler content is close to 40 wt%. The use of organically modified clay as a filler in epoxy resin nanocomposites have been shown to have a low flammability rating in the UL 94 test [13]. High levels of clay improved the flame resistance appreciably [17].
