As regards toxicity, pyrazole itself induced hyperplasia of the thyroid, hepatomegaly, atrophy of the testis, anemia and bone marrow depression in rats and mice (72E1198). The 4-methyl derivative is well tolerated and may be more useful than pyrazole for pharmacological and metabolic studies of inhibition of ethanol metabolism. It has been shown (79MI40404) that administration of pyrazole or ethanol to rats had only moderate effects on the liver, but combined treatment resulted in severe hepatotoxic effects with liver necrosis. The fact that pyrazole strongly intensified the toxic effects of ethanol is due to inhibition of the enzymes involved in alcohol oxidation (Section 4.04.4.1.1). 

The impact of Ice Storm 98 can clearly be seen by realizing that the number of customer interruptions and the customer hours of interruption for all of Canada in 1997 were 24,280,244 and 38,130,783, respectively. The ice storm alone resulted in 12,332,950 customer interruptions and 282,576,829 customer hours of interruption in the utilities affected. Removing the ice storm incidents from the 1998 Canada-wide data results in a SAIFI of 2.46 and a SAIDI of 3.40. The lOR is 99.9612 percent. Ice Storm 98 had only a relatively moderate effect on SAIFI but a dominant effect on the customer hours of interruption and the SAIDI statistic due to the extremely long storm duration and the required restoration period. It is important to realize that the bulk transmission system retained its integrity according to NERC criteria, and the impact of the ice storm on Ontario Hydro facilities did not propagate into neighboring interconnected utilities.

The choice of the acyl substituent X for Diels-Alder reactions of l-N-acylamino-l,3-butadicnes depends on the particular synthetic problem. Resins are moderately effective in lowering LDL cholesterol but do not lower triglycerides (Table 9-8). Moreover, in patients with elevated triglycerides, the use of a resin may worsen the condition. Thiazide diuretics such as chlorothiazide act on the distal tubule, a portion of the tubule that is permeable to sodium. The mechanism of action of these diuretics involves inhibition of NaCl reabsorption by blocking the Na+, CL symporter in the luminal membrane. The thiazide diuretics are only moderately effective due to the location of their site of action. Approximately 90% of the filtered Na+ ions have already been reabsorbed when the filtrate reaches the distal tubule. These drugs may be used for treatment of edema associated with heart, liver, and renal disease. Thiazide diuretics are also widely used for the treatment of hypertension. 

The effect of inorganic additives upon ignition delay in anilinium nitrate-red finning nitric acid systems was examined. The insoluble compounds copper(I) chloride, potassium permanganate, sodium pentacyanonitrosylferrate and vanadium(V) oxide were moderately effective promoters, while the soluble ammonium or sodium metavanadates were very effective, producing vigorous ignition.

Meat from animals that have suffered only mild to moderate effects from exposure to nerve agents should be safe to consume.
