Despite the potent influence of ethylene on the whole plant development, most often it has been recognized as a fruit-ripening and senescence-associated hormone. In essence, the apparatus consists of a fixed-volume equilibrium cell, the temperature and pressure of which can be accurately controlled and measured. The mixing, storage and circulation tanks for coating colors are made of stainless steel, since the pH range of raw materials and coating colors tends to corrode standard steels. Most vessels are equipped with an agitator, and some also have a shell/jacket that may be heated or cooled. Agitators are mostly indispensable because, in low-viscosity colors especially, soHd color components are prone to sedimentation unless the suspension is stirred continuously.

Unfilled RIM polymers have low rigidity and high coefficients of thermal expansion, which is a problem when they are mated with metal parts. To overcome these defects fillers, mainly mica and wollastonite, are added to the polyol components by the molder to create RRIM. These fillers tend to settle out, especially since the viscosity of the components is reduced when they are heated to accelerate gelation. To overcome this, the filled polyols are continuously pumped from the mixing/storage tank through the lines to the mixing head and back.
