Minority Officials

The years from 1923 to 1938 were relatively unproductive for G. N. Lewis insofar as his own research was concerned. The applications of the electron-pair bond came largely in the areas of organic and quantum chemistry in neither of these fields did Lewis feel at home. In the early 1930s. he published a series of relatively minor papers dealing with the properties of deuterium. Then in 1939 he began to publish in the field of photochemistry. Of approximately 20 papers in this area, several were of fundamental importance, comparable in quality to the best work of his early years. Retired officially in 1945, Lewis died a year later while carrying out an experiment on fluorescence. 

She was one of those pretty, charming women who are born, as if by an error of Fate, into a petty official s family. She had no dowry,1 no hopes, nor the slightest chance of being loved and married by a rich man—so she slipped into marriage with a minor civil servant. 

The European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) has also adopted some of the apparatus designs (12) described in the USP, with some minor modifications in the specifications. Small but persistent differences between the two have their origin in the fact that the American metal processing industry, unlike the European, uses the imperial rather than the metric system. In the European Pharmacopeia, official dissolution testing apparatus for special dosage forms (medicated chewing gum, transdermal patches) have also been incorporated (Table 2 provides an overview of apparatus in Ph. Eur.). 

Several elements naturally exist in two isotopes. Within the context of mass spectrometry it is useful to deal with them as a class of their own. Nevertheless, the term di-isotopic element is not an official one. These elements can even be subclassified into those having one isotope that is 1 u heavier than the most abundant isotope and those having one isotope that is 2 u heavier than the most abundant isotope. (For the unit u cf. Chap. 3.1.4.2). The first group has been termed A-rl or Xh-1 elements, the latter ones have been termed Ah-2 or Xh-2 elements, respectively. [2,3] If we do not restrict our view to the elements typically encountered in organic mass spectrometry, the class of X-1 elements with one minor isotope of 1 u lower mass than the most abundant one should be added. 

The substances we have described in this book turn out to be, for the most part, minor threats to our health. There are, however, perhaps thousands of these threats, and so a regulatory system has evolved to reduce the risks of individual substances to very low levels. There is considerable work yet to be done, to learn the toxic properties of many poorly tested chemicals, and to assess their health risks, but once this is done, regulatory officials have available strong weapons (which they do not always choose to deploy) to reduce exposures when necessary. The burden for exposure reduction falls not on exposed individuals (as in the case of lifestyle factors), but rather upon those who have caused the exposures to occur. 

Sprinklers are the most common fire protection system used today. Most local building code officials and fire marshals have adopted NFPA 13 as law in their areas of jurisdiction. Many local authorities have added minor modifications unique to their areas. 

The official estimate in 1998 also includes a breakdown by race (table 9.8) Note that Hispanic is a special ethnic designation, and can be of any race. America is becoming less white, as most racial minorities are experiencing population increases faster than the whites. There is also the rise of the multi-racial population in America, which will be included in future population classifications as a separate category. All these characteristics and changes in the population are important, as marketers need to study the consumption preferences of each segment of the population. 

Under European rule in Spanish Manila (from 1571), Dutch Batavia (1619), Melaka (1640), Makasar (1669) and other such ports, and eventually British Penang (1786) and Singapore (1819), the ruling class was an impervious racial one and there was very little incentive to change identity. After much initial hostility and competition, the European officials established a remarkable symbiosis with Chinese merchants and craftsmen, who became a classic middleman minority filling the commercial space between ruler and ruled (Zenner 1991 Reid 1997). 

Spaniards hold a cultural prejudice against intoxication, drunkenness being a sort of ethnic boundary attributed to outsiders. In fact, Spaniards derived a sense of superiority over northern Europeans and over the natives they ruled in their colonies because of their "civilized" attitude toward drinking. In colonial Mexico. .. local Spanish officials saw excessive drinking as a custom that supported their view of Mexicans as "perpetual minors," incapable of conforming to Spanish standards of moderation. Action letter An official communication from the FDA to an NDA sponsor that informs of a decision by the agency. An approval letter allows commercial marketing of the product. An approval letter lists minor issues to be resolved before approval can be given. A not approvable letter describes important deficiencies that preclude approval unless corrected.

Since 1992, the DEA has received more than 500 reports of the sale and/or use of ketamine by minors on college campuses, at nightclubs, and at raves.63 Most DEA field divisions report that ketamine is available in their areas, while several indicate that availability is increasing.64 The sale of ketamine as a drug of abuse to undercover law enforcement officials has also been recorded.
