Throughout the process of development, drags may have several names assigned to them a chemical name, a generic (nonproprietary) name, an official name, and a trade or brand name This is confusing unless the nurse has a clear understanding of the different names used. Table 1-1 identifies the different names and provides an explanation of each. [Pg.3]

Rutherford continued to do research until his death, but the proton was his last big discovery. It was not, however, his last big honor. In 1931, the New Zealand country boy was raised to the peerage with the official name of Ernest, Lord Rutherford of Nelson. After his death six years later, he was awarded one last honor. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, where he keeps company with Isaac Newton and a handful of other great British scientists. [Pg.31]

Although no details are available, these agents are a novel family of binary nerve agents. Novichok compounds were derived from this new set of unitary agents (no official name for this series of compounds is available, so for lack of a better name, A-series nerve agents) designated A-230, A-232, and A-234, which had been created earlier. [Pg.79]

The official name aldrin has been designated for material containing at least 95% of IV, and dieldrin for material containing at least 85% of V. [Pg.189]

Genetic conditions are not named in one standard way (unlike genes, which are given an official name and symbol by a formal committee). Doctors who treat families with a particular disorder are often the first to propose a name for the condition. Expert working groups may later revise the name to improve its usefulness. Naming is important because it allows accurate and effective communication about particular conditions, which will ultimately help researchers find new approaches to treatment. [Pg.27]

By the end of the 1920s, Bohr s institute (the official name was the University of Copenhagen Institute of Theoretical Physics, but everyone called it Bohr s institute instead) had become the world s most famous center for research in physics. It was visited at one time or another by many of the most notable physicists of the first half of the twentieth century, and many noted physicists of the second half of the century did postdoctoral work there. Physicists often visited the institute to have discussions with Bohr, who was recognized as a leading physicist within a few years of the publication of his quantum theory of the hydrogen atom. And in 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Bohr and Einstein received the prize the same year. But it wasn t a shared prize Einstein s was for 1921. [Pg.189]

Taxol has received considerable competitive challenge from taxotere, officially named docetaxel, a patented taxol analog developed by Rh6ne-Poulenc, based on the 1981 first successful semi-synthesis by Gueritte-Voegelein from 10-DAB. In 1987, Rh6ne-Poulenc selected taxotere for clinical development, and it is now used clinically in the United States. [Pg.45]

Charles D. Coryell, 1912-. Professoi of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Consultant to the Brookhaven and Oak Ridge National Laboratories of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The studies of J. A. Marinsky and L. E. Glendenin in his group led to the chemical identification of the missing element 61, which in 1949 was officially named promethium. Dr. Coryell participates actively in the scientific efforts of the Federation of American Scientists and of the United World Federalists toward peace and world stability. [Pg.864]

The official name for the Welrod was Hand Firing Device Mark I, and it was also tried in 9rmn (0.3S4 inch) Parabellum and 0.4S inch (11.4mm) ACP. There were difficulties with both of these. The barrel was very short in the 9mm version, and inside the silencer was a perforated steel tube which dissipated the muzzle gases into the larger space of the silencer casing. The bullet was thus robbed of some propulsive force and left the other end of the silencer at below the speed of sound. The gas then followed it via a rubber disc, which slowed it down sufficiently to make sure that there was no noise. Despite the ingenuity the life of the silencers was short, and both the 9mm and the 0.45 inch ammo were too powerful for the little gun Ref B. Another system, which is also allowed by IUPAC and is sometimes very convenient (but which should be avoided when official names are established by IUPAC and cited in Chemical Abstracts), is the so-called a -nomenclature, in which the term phospha indicates replacement of carbon by phosphorus, e.g. phosphacyclohexane = phosphorinane, and phosphabenzene = A3- phosphorin. Five-coordinate phosphorus compounds are called phos-phoranes. However, this name is also used for phosphorus ylides with a four-coordinate phosphorus and a more or less polar R3f—CX moiety or a d -p R3P=CX double bond, e.g. methylenetriphenylphosphorane = triphenylphosphorus methylene ylide or tri-phenylphosphonium methyl ylide, Ph3P=CH2 = Ph3P—CH2. [Pg.496]

As an example, chymotrypsin is classified EC 3.4.4.5 according to the IUB system.210 In this book a more mechanistically based classification is used. Because some official names are quite long, traditional trivial names for enzymes often have been retained. Remember that to be precise it is always necessary to mention the species from which an enzyme was isolated and, if possible, the strain. Also remember that almost every significant genetic difference is reflected in some change in some protein. It is possible that the enzyme you are working with is slightly different from the same enzyme prepared in a different laboratory. [Pg.498]

CHEMICAL ELEMENTS. A chemical element may be defined as a collection of atoms of otic type which cannot be decomposed into any simpler units by any chemical transformation, but which may spontaneously change into other units by radioactive processes A chemical element is a substance that is made up of but one kind of atom. Of the over 100 chemical elements known, only 90 tire found in nature. The remaining elements have been produced in nuclear reactors and particle accelerators. Theoretical physicists do not all agree, but some believe that fission-stable nuclei should exist at atomic numbers 109. 114. and 126. Claims thus lur have been made for the discovery, isolation, or creation of elements up to 110. The element with the highest atomic number officially named and entered into the formal table of atomic weight is darmstudlium (Dx) with an atomic number of 110. [Pg.326]
