With the trend toward higher pressures in hydraulic systems, the loads on unbalanced pump and motor components become greater and this, coupled with the need for closer fits to contain the higher pressures, can introduce acute lubrication problems. Pumps, one of the main centers of wear, can be made smaller if they can run at higher speeds or higher pressures, but this is only possible with adequate lubrication. For this reason, a fluid with good lubrication properties is used so that hydraulics is now almost synonymous with oil hydraulics in general industrial applications. Mineral oils are inexpensive and readily obtainable while their viscosity can be matched to a particular job. 

Extracellular enzymes are rapidly sorbed at mineral and humic colloids in soils and sediments. Mineral colloids have a high affinity for enzymes although that is not always synonymous with the retention of their catalytic ability. On the other hand, humic substances have the ability to sorb and sequester enzymes in such a way as to retain their catalytic activity they could also strongly inactivate enzyme activity depending on interaction mechanisms. 

In the previous sections composition variation has been attributed more or less to point defects and extensions of the point defect concept. In this section structures that can be considered to be built from slabs of one or more parent structures are described. They are frequently found in mineral specimens, and the piecemeal way in which early examples were discovered has led to a number of more or less synonymic terms for their description, including intergrowth phases, composite structures, polysynthetic twinned phases, polysomatic phases, and tropochemical cell-twinned phases. In general, they are all considered to be modular structures.

The long history of bestowing names on minerals has provided some confusing legacies. Many mineral names end with the suffix ite, although not most of the common species no standard naming practice has ever been adopted. Occasionally different names have been applied to samples of the same mineral that differ only in color or shape, but are identical to each other in chemical composition and crystal structure. These names, usually of the common rock-forming minerals, are often encountered and are therefore accepted as synonyms or as varieties of bona fide mineral species. The Fibrous Minerals list (Appendix 1) includes synonyms.

The concept zeolites conventionally served as the synonym for aluminosilicates with microporous host lattice structures. Upon removal of the guest water, zeolites demonstrate adsorptive property at the molecular level as a result they are also referred to as molecular sieves. Crystalline zeosils, AlPO s, SAPO s, MAPO s (M=metal), expanded clay minerals and Werner compounds are also able to adsorb molecules vitally on reproval of any of the guest species they occlude and play an Important role in fields such as separation and catalysis (ref. 1). Inclusion compounds are another kind of crystalline materials with open framework structures. The guest molecules in an inclusion compound are believed to be indispensable to sustaining the framework structure their removal from the host lattice usually results in collapse of the host into a more compact crystal structure or even into an amorphous structure. 

It is obvious then that A1 is not synonymous with Fe in sedimentary mica-like minerals. The increasing influence of trivalent iron in a sedimentary system will obviously provoke the crystallization of a specific mineral series which is not contiguous with illite and which would not be present otherwise. The development of glauconite in sediments should be due to specific local conditions which permit the chemical evolution of an initial montmorillonite material to celadonite mica-like phase. In fact previous observations have consistently led to this conclusion as to the origin of glauconite in sediments and sedimentary rocks.
