Of the naturally occurring metal sulfates only heavy spar (BaS04) is important for filler manufacture. Smaller quantities of gypsum (CaS04 2H2O, light spar) are also processed to fillers.

Antiinfective, antiamoebic. Used in photometric detn. of Mo, Nb, Ta. Brownish-yellow powder, darkens when exp. to light. Spar. sol. Et20. Dec. at ca. 178-179°. Constit. of Enterovioform. Can cause nerve damage.
