Minerals, nutrition

The role of water in the life of plants is well known. In terms of its major effects this role consists in transporting the mineral nutrition, maintenance of intracellular pressure responsible for the vertical growth of plants and, finally, participation in photosynthesis which provide the biomass growth, or plainly speaking, the crop production. [Pg.121]

The level of plant mineral nutrients available to trees is known to affect fruit quality, but its relative effect is often overestimated compared to other factors such as fruit load and light (and associated assimilate supply to fruit) (see sections above) (for review see Neilsen and Neilsen, 2003). The mineral nutrition of trees and fruits is complex. Uptake of the macronutrients nitrogen... [Pg.335]

General mineral nutrition status improvement for the host plant has been studied frequently to understand the roles of endophytic fungi. Iron nutrition, however, has been studied only occasionally. P. fortinii strains obtained from Pinus sylvestris, Abies alba, Picea abies, and Carex curvula (the last a monocotyledonous plant) were found to produce the cyclic hexapeptide siderophores ferricrocin (73), ferrirubin (74) and ferrichrome C (75). The concentration and pattern of siderophore production was dependent on ferric ion concentration, pH of the medium, and the strain of endophyte. [Pg.538]
