As improvements over P-methylumbeUiferone (55—57), 4-methyl-7-amino-coumarin [26093-31-2] (12a) and 7-dimethylamino-4-methylcoumarin [87-014] (12b) (58—61) were proposed. These compounds are used for brightening wool and nylon either in soap powders or detergents, or as salts under acid dyeing conditions. Oil spillages onto warm, absorbent materials, such as insulation, also have a limited life (see Sections 7.3.2 and 12.4.4). The oil soon decomposes to materials with a low auto-ignition temperature and self-ignites. As many insulation fires have started in this way, oil-soaked insulation should be removed without delay. Linseed oil ignites particularly easily. Soap chips are made by running a thin sheet of melted soap onto a cool cylinder and scraping off the soaps in small broken pieces. Soap granules are dried miniature soap bubbles. To prepare, clean and dry a square, half-gallon milk carton. Pour in 4 cups of fuel and 2 tablespoons of denatured alcohol. Mix well. Add 2 1/2 cups of soap powder or 3 1/2 cups of soap flakes. Stir until it begins to thicken, approximately 15 minutes. Seal the carton with tape and let it sit for 2 days. The mixture will thicken into a firm buttery paste. Chill for an hour in the refrigerator, remove, and carefully peel off the milk carton. Cut the resulting block into 1-inch slabs and place them in individual sandwich bags. Mixtures with soap powder, soda ash, water-glass or sodium phosphate are also marketed. The advantage of these powders is the lower soap consumption and fabrics washed in them wear longer than when soda ash is used.
