Attraction of females mediated by compounds released from scent brushes or coremata of males has been documented in other moths, including E. acrea and... [Pg.291]

Attraction of female digger wasps, Astata occidentalis Cresson (Hymenoptera Sphecidae) to the sex pheromone of the stink bug Thyanta pallidovirens (Hemiptera Pentatomidae). The American warble fly, Dermatobia hominis, is a species that attacks humans. Adults produce mainly n-saturated alkanes and various mono- and dimethylalkanes with 21 11 carbon atoms. Females produce more n-tricosane and n-pentacosane than males, which produce more CHCs with at least 29 carbon atoms. Olfactometer tests show a reciprocal attraction of females and males to the extract of the other sex, and suggest that CHCs are used for sexual discrimination (Gomes and Trigo, 2008). [Pg.331]

Among insect pheromones a great number of mono- and polyolefinic compounds are found a lot of them can be obtained by the Wittig reaction. Especially the syntheses of sex attractants of female butterflies and moths, which are mostly mono- and bisunsaturated alcohols, acetates or aldehydes 168), offer a broad field for the application of the Wittig reaction and have stimulated the development of many new stereoselective variants. Thus, the methods of salt-free Wittig reactions (Chapter 2) like the sodium amide method11 31 32, the silazide technique33, potassium in HMPA 34,35 or the use of dipolar aprotic solvents like dimethyl formamide 169>, dimethyl sulfoxide 51,170) or hexamethylphosphoric triamide 51 170) were often used. [Pg.120]

One of the most troublesome pests in Brazilian coffee plantations is the Coffee leaf miner moth Leucoptera cojfeella) (Fig. 8.81). In 1988, Wittko Francke recognised that the main component of the sex attractant of females is 5,9-di-methylpentadecane. [188]... [Pg.767]

The primer pheromone (for definition see page 2) of sexually mature females increases the plasma testosterone level of male mice 329), raises the basal levels of plasma corticosteroids in individually housed females as well as in virgin female mice and influences the attractiveness of female rats to sexually experienced males 280). [Pg.20]
