At places where damage could occur the wall should be made of impact-proof and scratch-proof material, e.g. melamine resin sheet material like Trespa . At other places, e.g. above breast height, cheaper gypsum board walls can be used, provided that they are treated with a specific water-resistant coating that can also resist the chemicals used for cleaning and disinfecting.

Decorative laminates have a core or base of Kraft paper impregnated with a phenolic resin. A printed pattern layer impregnated with a melamine-formaldehyde or urea-thiourea-formaldehyde resin is then laid on the core and on top of this a melamine resin-impregnated protective translucent outer sheet. The assembly is then cured at 125-150°C in multi-daylight presses in the usual way. 

The printing ink industry uses P.Y.120 primarily for decorative printing inks on laminated melamine and polyester resin sheets. In terms of lightfastness, 8% gravure prints in 20 and 40 pm cells on such plates correspond to step 8 on the Blue Scale. Plate-out is not observed. P.Y.120 is insoluble in monostyrene and acetone (Sec. 1.8.1.2). 

Decorative laminate is defined in ISO 472 but in common usage has come to mean sheet materials consisting of decorative surface papers impregnated with melamine resin and consolidated under heat and pressure with plies of core paper permeated with phenolic resin. In a wider sense the term can be applied to many associated products—including laminates in solid colour laminates with facings such as metal foils, textiles, or wood veneers polyester laminates direct faced boards and composite boards comprising thin laminates bonded to substrates of various kinds.

The mold is then closed again, and the curing cycle is completed. The overlay consists of a cellulose sheet having printed decoration and covered with a thin layer of partially cured clear melamine resin. During the molding cycle the overlay is fused to the product and becomes a part of the molding. The process is relatively inexpensive, especially when a multicolor decoration is required.

Phenolic resins are generally used in alcohohc solution, whereas melamine resins are best handled in water or water-alcohol mixtures. The paper or cloth web is passed through a dip tank containing resin solution, adjusted for pickup on squeeze rolls, and then passed through a heated dr3ung oven. Once dried, the treated paper or cloth is fairly stable and, if stored in a cool place, it may be kept for several weeks or months before pressing into laminated plastic sheets. 

Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins are mainly used as adhesives for wood. Laminated sheets (tables and counter tops) are a major application for melamine resins, which stay in the outer decorative surface. Molding compounds, their first big application, is still a major market, taking advantage of their extreme hardness and heat resistance. Coatings, textile finishing, paper additives, leather tanning and foundry binders, for which methanol- or butanol-etherified resins are usually employed, are important markets discussed in Ref 203. 

Melamine-formaldehyde resin provides both adhesive and functional properties in Formica decorative laminates. To prepare a decorative laminate, a melamine resin-impregnated decorative sheet is sandwiched between a melamine resin-treated protective overlay layer and a number of phenolic resin-treated support layers. The resulting combination provides the remarkable properties of the decorative appearance of the printed pattern protected by the hard, stain-resistant, and abrasion resistant surface provided by the melamine-formaldehyde resin. 

Decorative surfaces are obtained by applying a top sheet of white paper on which there is a printed design. This is covered with a clear coating of melamine or vinyl resin. Or, a thin transparent (when cured) paper impregnated with melamine resin may be applied to a decorative veneer, providing a permanent protective finish.

Inside walls, which are made of aluminum sheets decorated with melamine resin or nonrigid PVC sheets, are joined to the frame using adhesives or screws. In almost aU cases, a spacing plate made of flame retardant hardboard or rigid PVC is inserted between the inside walls and the frames to adjust their flatness and to prevent generation of creaky noise. The spacing plate is bonded on frames and the back of walls with nitrile rubber adhesives. 

Door panels have a sandwich structure consisting of aluminum or stainless steel surface plates and aluminum or paper honeycomb core bonded with two-part epoxy adhesives. On inspection lids, switchboard covers, and seat side panels, decorated aluminum sheets with melamine resin are bonded with second generation acrylic adhesives (SGAs) to aluminum frames or stiffeners.
