Material selection separations

Impurity removal materials, selective separation membranes, chromatographic colunm materials, ion exchange resins... [Pg.446]

Other above-ground continuous flow systems have been designed and operated for SCWO processes. A system developed by ModeU Development Corp. (Modec) uses a tubular reactor and can be operated at temperatures above 500°C. It employs a pressure letdown system in which soHd, Hquids, and gases are separated prior to pressure release. This simplifies valve design and material selection on the Hquid leg. [Pg.502]

Finally, selective separation and dewatering of one suspended substance in a slurry containing different minerals or precipitates is possible by selectively adsorbing a magnetic material (usually hydrophobic) onto a soHd that is also naturally or chemically conditioned to a hydrophobic state. This process (Murex) was used on both sulfide ores and some oxides (145). More recently, hydrocarbon-based ferrofluids were tested and shown to selectively adsorb on coal from slurries of coal and mineral matter, allowing magnetic recovery (147). Copper and zinc sulfides were similarly recoverable as a dewatered product from waste-rock slurries (148). [Pg.27]

Certain highly porous solid materials selectively adsorb certain molecules. Examples are silica gel for separation of aromatics from other hydrocarbons, and activated charcoal for removing liquid components from gases. Adsorption is analogous to absorption, but the principles are different. Layers of adsorbed material, only a few molecules thick, are formed on the extensive interior area of the adsorbent - possibly as large as 50,000 sq. ft./lb of material. [Pg.288]

The second example is the SE-HPLC analysis of recombinant hGH. In this example, SE-HPLC is used for both a purity and a protein concentration method for bulk and formulated finished products. This method selectively separates both low molecular weight excipient materials and high molecular weight dimer and aggregate forms of hGH from monomeric hGH, as shown... [Pg.533]

An important selection of materials to packaging, particularly food, is based on the permeability of the materials to oxygen, water vapor, and, in the case of packaging bananas, to ethylene gas that is used to artificially ripen the bananas. Selective permeability provides chemical separations, one of the most interesting of which is the use of PTFE materials to separate the hexafluorides of the different isotopes of uranium. [Pg.240]

Systems with different selectivity were nsed for the separation of 10-deacetyl-baccatin III (10 DAB 111) from yew extracts [69]. A silica column with stepwise gradient elution with aqneous methanolic mobile phases can be nsed for separation of the taxoid fraction from nonpolar materials, partial separation of the taxoid fraction into a polar one (containing 10-DAB 111), and for a medinm polarity taxoid fraction (containing paclitaxel and cephalomannine). Most polar material (tannins... [Pg.272]

If we consider only a few of the general requirements for the ideal polymer/additive analysis techniques (e.g. no matrix interferences, quantitative), then it is obvious that the choice is much restricted. Elements of the ideal method might include LD and MS, with reference to CRMs. Laser desorption and REMPI-MS are moving closest to direct selective sampling tandem mass spectrometry is supreme in identification. Direct-probe MS may yield accurate masses and concentrations of the components contained in the polymeric material. Selective sample preparation, efficient separation, selective detection, mass spectrometry and chemometric deconvolution techniques are complementary rather than competitive techniques. For elemental analysis, LA-ICP-ToFMS scores high. [Pg.744]

The selective separation of water from aqueous solutions of isopropanol or the dehydration of isopropanol can be carried out with different membranes, which contain polar groups, either in the backbone or as pendent moieties. For the dehydration of such a mixture, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and PVA-based membranes have been used extensively. PVA is the primary material from which the commercial membranes are fabricated and has been studied intensively for pervaporation because of its excellent film forming, high hydrophilicity due to -OH groups as pendant moieties, and chemical-resistant properties. On the contrary, PVA has poor stability at higher water concentrations, and hence selectivity decreases remarkably. [Pg.124]

The work on hi level waste solidification has led to applications of the same materials to other areas of waste management. These include decontamination of defense wastes currently in tank storage at Richland, WA, selective separation of Cs for beneficial uses, and development of a process flowsheet for conversion of Zircaloy fuel cladding hulls to sodium zirconate for use in waste stabilization. Each is briefly described below. [Pg.144]
