Several specific studies have been made on the LAS transport processes in a variety of different estuarine and marine environmental compartments (e.g. LAS removal by biodegradation and/or adsorption), including the flux of LAS from freshwater to a coastal environment [3,6, 29,40]. However, a complete study of LAS behaviour requires knowledge of their primary biodegradation intermediates, SPC, that have been detected in different laboratory tests [15,36,37], Their existence in fresh-water [2,13] and marine water [5] has been demonstrated recently. 

Much information of relevance for the environment of the two atolls on the distributions and amounts of residual radionuclides is available in the results of the French monitoring programmes. For the reasons given above, the lAC decided to conduct an independent environmental sampling and surveillance campaign at the two atolls. The survey campaign was conducted at the atolls in July 1996. The campaign comprised a terrestrial part co-ordinated by the IAEA Seibersdorf Laboratory and an aquatic part co-ordinated by the lEA Marine environment Laboratory in Monaco. 

The majority of samples dealt with by a typical environmental laboratory are likely to be waters, whether this be groundwaters, rivers, marine or effluents and accordingly the use of reversed phase HPLC has obvious advantages. A look at current literature will show an almost exclusive use of reversed-phase HPLC techniques used for environmental samples.

The ISO Council on Reference Materials (REMCO) has identified more than 170 RM producers worldwide for the various fields of analyses. Two main bodies - the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA) and the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM, European Commission, Belgium), successor of BCR (which is now a trade mark for materials produced by IRMM) - cover several fields and ensure long-term availability of the CRMs due to the large batches of materials produced. Other producers specialize in a particular field of interest, e.g., the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC, Canada), the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES, Japan), the IAEA Marine Environment Laboratory (Monaco), etc., specialize in marine analysis. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Austria) mainly provides materials for nuclear measurements but also supplies RMs for non-nuclear analyses. 

The best sub-atmospheric refrigerant is water. Unfortunately it is not strongly adsorbed by carbons, but refrigerators and heat pumps based on water - zeolite pairs have been built and tested in research laboratories. Methanol is adsorbed well by carbons and a solar refrigerator based on a carbon - methanol pair was marketed by Brissoneau et Lotz Marine in France. Methanol is environmentally friendly, but deeomposes at temperatures around 150°C and so camiot be used for very high temperature cycles.

Work is in progress to validate the MAE method, proposed for EPA, in a multi-laboratory evaluation study. Nothing similar has been reported for additives in polymeric matrices. Dean el al. [452] have reviewed microwave-assisted solvent extraction in environmental organic analysis. Chee et al. [468] have reported MAE of phthalate esters (DMP, DEP, DAP, DBP, BBP, DEHP) from marine sediments. The focus to date has centred on extractions from solid samples. However, recent experience suggests that MAE may also be important for extractions from liquids. 

During the media blitz that followed, Patterson urged the public to buy Chicken of the Sea tuna because the Van Camp Sea Food Company s molded steel cans were lead-free. With characteristic bluntness, Patterson lambasted a host of government laboratories from the Environmental Protection Agency and its Bureau of Foods to the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Asked if any other laboratories agreed with his findings, Patterson declared loftily that scientific questions are not determined by majority vote. 

The Marine Biotechnology Institute (MBI) was founded in 1987 for the study and applications of biodiversity in marine environments. Currently, and within the scope of the present book, the research area of relevance is industrial applications of microbiology . The institute also performs research in C02 fixation. The Applied Microbiology Laboratory is searching cost-effective utilization of microbes for environmental conservation and restoration. In particular, the decontamination of areas polluted with petroleum-related compounds has been addressed. Attention has been paid to removal of polycyclic hydrocarbons. They are also developing processing methods for the conversion of biomass and organic wastes by methane fermentation.
