When the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) was founded in 1925, one of its chief roles was to be a source of standards. In this context we mean standard organisms, rather than standard materials or chemicals known as Reference Materials or Certified Reference Materials and issued in the USA by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). The National Bureau of Standards evolved into NIST and the abbreviation SRM became a trade mark of NIST.

A process innovation was introduced by Valentine [61], who added an SOx sorbent for mitigating the inhibiting effects of the formed oxysulfides. This process was developed for sulfur removal from extra heavy oils, bitumens, and its emulsions, such as the trade mark Orimulsion. Any active biocatalyst may be used in this process carried out at temperatures close to 50°C. The main features disclosed in patents protecting the use of R. rhodochrous-bas d biocatalysts, in desulfurization reactions are summarized in Table 12. 

An elastomer made by substituting chlorine and sulphonyl chloride groups into polyethylene. The material is best known by the trade name Hypalon, which is the DuPont trade mark for their brand of chlorosulphonated polyethylene. 

This type of product is widely available as a slightly different taste and texture added value product. It is often available under a trade mark, which the trade mark owners rigorously protect, even by sending their staff out to ask for the product and taking action if a competitor s product is supplied instead. The trade mark owner is trying to prevent their trade mark being devalued to merely the generic term for the product. 

The miller supplies the flour to bakeries and at retail on the basis that the baker can then sell the bread under the trade name. Similar bread not made from the trade marked flour would have to be sold either under another trade mark or under a generic description such as Bread with added malt grains . 

Copyright and trade mark laws present special problems for works such as this, protection varying from country to country and from time to time. It would not be feasible to indicate which of the many names in this dictionary are so protected. The inclusion of a protected name, in its registered or commonly used format, has no legal significance and does not indicate that the name has become a generic word.

Since the discovery of the anticancer potential of Taxol , a complex compound isolated from the bark extract of the Pacific yew tree, more than 20 years ago, there has been an increasing demand for the clinical application of this compound. First, the promising results of the 1991 clinical trials in breast cancer patients were announced, and soon after Bristol-Myers-Squibb trade-marked the name Taxol and used it as an anticancer drug. At that point, the only source of the drug was the bark of the endangered yew tree. Fortunately, it was soon discovered that a precursor of Taxol could be obtained from an extract of the tree needles instead of the bark.
