Machinery lifting equipment

Certain types of equipment are specifically excluded from the scope of the directive. It is self-evident that equipment which is already regulated at Union level with respect to the pressure risk by other directives had to be excluded. That is the case with simple pressure vessels, transportable pressure equipment, aerosols and motor vehicles. Other equipment, such as carbonated drink containers or radiators and piping for hot water systems are excluded from the scope because of the limited risk involved. Also excluded are products which are subject to a minor pressure risk which are covered by the directives on machinery, lifts, low voltage, medical devices, gas appliances and on explosive atmospheres. A further and last group of exclusions refers to equipment which presents a significant pressure risk, but for which neither the free circulation aspect nor the safety aspect necessitated their inclusion. 

You will need to ensure that all plant and equpment (eg lift trucks, vehicles, gas appliances, machinery guarding, ladders, electrical equipment, lifting equipment, air receivers, ventilation plant) that requires maintenance (eg pre-shift checks, servicing, thorough examinations) is identified and that the maintenance is done.

Since the BAG section was to be run as two separate entities, a development factory and a production works, and a third independent factory for BSA was now also proposed, it became necessary to install three goods and machinery lifts instead of the one already planned, which greatly increased costs. An additional 32,500 was required to provide canteen equipment to replace that which was not, after all, to be transferred from Filton, following abandonment of the dispersal scheme. As production facilities were to remain at Filton, it was necessary to provide new plant and equipment (particularly transformers, switchgear and motor generator sets) rather than move them from the original site. Nearer the end of the project in 1943 a separate parliamentary vote of 3,000,000 was made for the purchase of new machine tools for the finished factory,... 

The equipment required for working in a process plant comprises a wide spectrum process apparatuses and machinery, machine tools, lifting equipment, hand tools, ladders, control room equipment, office machines etc. 

The manufacture of all lifting equipment except Hfts should comply with SMSR (see 13.1), which contain the main requirements for the construction of machinery including lifts and which, for the special conditions of lifts, are supplemented by the Lifts Regulations 1997 whose contents are summarized below ... 

For machinery, an interconnection of parts, one of which moves under power, causes the complex product to fall within the scope of the Machinery Directive (EC 2006a) (MD). All hazards posed by the machinery are subject to the Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR) relating to the design and construction of machinery and given in Annex I of the Machinery Directive. Note that apparatus that moves under purely manual effort is out of scope of the Machinery Directive, except for manually powered lifting equipment. 

The use of machinery and equipment to lift/ move loads does not mean that there is no effort or risk to workers. There are risks of serious injury, even death when the operator, namely is not trained or qualified to operate the requested equipment overload machines outside the limits of capacity or traffic rules in the workplace operates poorly maintained equipment not respect speeds advised, i.e., have wrong attitudes through ignorance, incompetence or negligence. 

Planning identification of the need for planned maintenance and arranging a schedule for this to meet any statutory requirements. A partial list of items for consideration includes air receivers and all pressure vessels, lifting equipment, electrical tools and machinery, fire and other emergency equipment, and structural items subject to wear, such as scaffold fittings. 

The baseplate shall be provided with lifting lugs for at least a four-point lift. Lifting the baseplate, complete with all equipment mounted, shall not permanently distort or otherwise damage the baseplate or the machinery mounted on it.

Other products to be installed in buildings must be CE marked, e.g. a lift system must be marked in accordance with the Lifts Directive (EC 1995). Another example would be hfting equipment that must be CE marked under the Machinery Directive (EC 2006a). 

These duties are further extended in detail for machinery, electrical and electronic apparatus gas appliances lifts and other equipment that is required to carry the CE mark before it can be put on the EU market. 

Many techniques have been developed to reduce these risks to a minimum and this chapter looks at some of those techniques that are available to the designer and user of modem equipment. What is not dealt with is the other vital element in the interface - the operator - and the training necessary to ensure his/her safety and how it matches the equipment, the culture and the working methods of the particular organisation. Essentially the term work equipment encompasses any equipment used in the course of work. However, in this chapter work equipment will be considered in four major frmctional areas machinery, power tmcks, cranes and lifts, and pressure systems.
